Chao.

ENGLISH S VERSIÓN

There are places where you can write several posts for the same community, or for others that connect almost directly with their environment. And one of those places is precisely "the eye of the cyclone", a sociocultural project located on the corner between Orelli Street and Villegas in the long-awaited and seductive Old Havana.

The eye of the cyclone can be written about from art in general, from cultural proposals where the community environment, sculpture, painting, collage, etc., has active participation. But you can also reveal the artistic and personal world of the community project manager, who shows a wealth of nuances not very common in these stressful and pragmatic times.

The soul of the "Eye of the Cyclone" is Leo D'Lazaro, in my opinion, an indispensable figure within contemporary sculpture in Cuba.
Today I am going to speak precisely about him. Well, without his mark, little could be said about the other.

The transformation of the environment near his studio into an open-air gallery is due to the artist's charisma, which, step by step, advances through the streets like tentacles of colors and metal structures, integrating sculpture, painting and architecture into an artistic whole.

I have rarely seen an artist with such a continuous and productive level of creation, but who also has enough time to attend and share a coffee or a coffee with friends, artists and visitors. chat in spaces packed with sometimes unusual creations. Leo D'Lázaro is not a traditional artist stuck in the mystical shell of a workshop. He does not even have his place of creation in a cramped or inaccessible room, for which it is necessary to carry out a protocol or anteroom to meet the creator.

He works in full view of everyone in a space continuous with a small protocol room, divided by unsuspected works that function as artificial walls in a rococo environment, where work instruments, a complete storage room (I think too complete) of accessories for other tasks, works in progress, finished works and materials for future coexist. creations.

This is a place created in feverish activity, which the fever for art has not separated from the family, since it has managed to potentially integrate it into its project, and each of its components has a different function in the dynamics of the workshop, the activities and the creation process.

His wife attends and teaches dance and tango workshops; One son is in charge of customer service in the downstairs area, while the other is in charge of a small gallery on the upper floor, where works by the artist and creator friends who are part of the project are exhibited. And the youngest of the family, still a baby, is already fluttering around the workshop, magnetized by the spell of that artistic oasis created by the father.

Personally, the artist, despite all his kindness and openness towards the community and viewers, is quite selective in the closest circle of his relationships.

To Leo's capacity and work pace is added the time he almost religiously dedicates daily to taking care of his body, for which he has a small gym created by him same on the upper floor. That time is sacred for him, so at that time any other activity is excluded.

But if you visit his workshop (where he spends most of the day (and his life) with his family), you will surely be satisfied with his kind and cordial treatment, even without being part of his closest circle of friends.

Thank you for accompanying me to meet this charismatic artist.
Chao.
