What makes a true disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ? (Part 1 of 2) | The Old Path
For you to be like Jesus, you need to be His disciple; as a disciple of Jesus, it means you are a follower of Jesus. The question then comes—what does it take to be Christ's disciple? Bro Eli simplified it by saying, “Following the teachings of Christ will make you a disciple of Christ.” You cannot be called a disciple if you were not taught the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ.
According to Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commissioned His disciples to do something—
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
As seen in the book of Matthew, a true disciple of Christ is made by being baptized and taught all the things that the Lord Jesus Christ commands—that is a simple qualification of a disciple. Furthermore, in the book of Acts 11:26,
And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
This means the disciples were properly taught the doctrines of Christ, causing them to be first called Christians in Antioch. So, as a disciple of Jesus, it is crucial to be taught the teachings of Christ and also follow the teachings of Christ. Bro Eli asked a question: “What must a disciple of Christ do?” The answer is he/she must do all the teachings of Christ; when these teachings are followed carefully, it will make you a disciple of Christ.
According to the Greek meaning of a disciple, Bro. Eli shares that it means a learner, or a pupil. Just like a pupil, a disciple must learn the teachings of Christ and put them into practice.
