Conference play came to a close last night for my nieces high school softball team with a tough loss. They actually kept the game pretty close right until the end. The pitching was a bit shaky to start out and the other team quickly jumped to a 2 to 0 lead. After and inning or two they had managed to tie it up 2-2, but then the other team scored a couple more runs to make it 4 to 2.
It was at the bottom of the sixth inning that things really took a turn and by the end of the game in the seventh inning, the other team had put up nine runs. The team still has a good number of games ahead of them to finish out the season. They are non conference games that shouldn't have any impact on their playoff seeding.
It's a sad fall from where they were a short time ago when they were in a four way tie for first place in the conference. It's actually really sad because as I said before, they have some really good talent on the team. I just don't feel like the coach utilizes them properly.
You might recall last week there was a game where my niece got intentionally walked pretty much every time she was at bat. @mrsbozz reached out to her over the weekend and asked her on a scale of 1 to 10 how annoying is it when they walk you and you don't get a chance to hit. Her reply was that it's somewhere up near 100.
I can't imagine how frustrating that must be. Don't get me wrong, I totally understand. If your pitcher isn't 100% on that day, my niece is downright dangerous with a bat in her hand. If there are runners on base, you are just begging for them to score by pitching to her. It's a smart tactical move by the opposing coaches, but I can understand how it would be annoying.
I'm not sure if I mentioned it yesterday, but my nephew is out for the week after taking a baseball to the head during one of his at bats. He has been to the doctor and they seem to think he just needs rest. He told my wife yesterday that his head is killing him. It's a good thing he is in concussion protocol. It also gives him a chance to slow down a little. Those kids are so busy!
Tomorrow I have some big news for you about the university teams I have been covering!
