Roberto never liked insects...

Well, more like, "BAH!" they weren't friends or enemies; to him, they were just there, like dust or cars.

Until one Sunday, at a picnic with the whole family, the ants marked him forever.

They'd laid out the red-checkered tablecloth on the grass without thoroughly inspecting the place, pillows, sandwiches, a thermos, and in the middle of it all… a trail of ants. No one paid any attention to them, until, five minutes later, Roberto jumped up, screaming and shaking like crazy.

Five of them bit him, right on his calf.

While he was scratching himself like a dog with ticks, he noticed something strange: there were six ants! SIX! But only five had bitten him.

And there, amid the itching and burning, he deduced that one hadn't bitten him.

He didn't know which one, obviously; he had no way of knowing. But the idea that one had decided not to attack him seemed… beautiful; imagine how desperate one more bite would be.

So, unwittingly, the one that hadn't bitten him became his favorite ant. Although I would never know what it was, maybe to thank him, hahaha…

The interesting thing is that this was the topic I philosophized about for the rest of the day. Sometimes you don't need a name, or faces, or certainties; it's enough to know that among all the things that hurt you, there's something or someone who chooses not to do it.

And that's enough.
