Yes I think it's calculations is not from your real time. So it's refreshing to current value as time goes up.
Meaning yesterday points, is been added to give you higher point, but once you get to refreshing time, point changes.

Yes one thing we don't know is the system time zone, because you may come in the morning to yesterday count, till the app update it.
According to what I have learned, this number will decrease after 24 hours of our comment time. for example, like my comment. now my daily comment count will increase by one. and this additional amount will be reduced tomorrow when it has been 24 hours since I published this comment.
Tell you the truth, I am like you, don't get it. All I know, the more you post the better.
As I understand it, it is constantly updated every second so the comments you wrote yesterday at this time won't count for today's leaderboard. If a comment already have 24 hours of being posted, it isn't counted anymore.
