Siberian ground squirrels on Mono Monday.

in Photography Lovers19 days ago

Hello photo lovers,

These are the Siberian ground squirrels and they are living in a public park in Tilburg.
These animals are not normally found in the Netherlands, but they are living in the wild in this park. And this is also the only place in the Netherlands were they live.

Pretty strange but if you hear the story how they ended up here you would be amassed.

from the year 1932 until the year 1972 there used to be a zoo on this location. But it ran out of business and the zoo was demolished in the winter of 1972.

And the story of these squirrels is that a couple of them were in hibernation in there underground sleeping place during demolition.

After the winter they all woke up and the zoo was gone.

From that moment this pack of squirrels lived in freedom in the park. And they are still thriving here since then. They were fed by the locals and they are a touristic attraction in the Netherlands.
