I couldn't figure out why my ip was not being hidden by my vpn even though my dns leak test was passing. Just sharing this here in case anyone else runs into something like this. ipv6 is enabled by default in ubuntu. most vpns do not shield your ipv6 identity, only ipv4. so unless you disable ipv6 on your router or through ubuntu, you have have a serious security breach if you have configured your vpn through the standard gui network settings. I'm convinced the only reason vpns exist is to give people a false sense of security for the police to exploit. But some people think it's like some big shield protecting us from whatever forces of evil is tampering upon our connections, which is a bit too much.
Of course you can run your own VPN but some things just aren't worth the effort. For nearly everyone, making your own VPN is difficult and unnecessary. Just like rolling your own email server. Not impossible, but hard to do right and absolutely not necessary.
I would have liked to have disabled it at the router level but my trashy router provided by my isp doesn't have an advanced setting for that. Turned it off in ubuntu using the following instructions and I am no longer showing a ipv6 adddress.
