I think it's just foolish to ignore the basic practical needs of life in pursuit of spiritual enlightenment. For the most, it's like rowing a boat when it is anchored on the shore, one wouldn't go far in their spiritual pursuit because the basic life needs will keep bringing them back to reality.
I think if one decides to be a hermit or ascetic that lives on the mountain, super minimalist lifestyle without any external responsibilities. Then that may not necessarily apply to such type of individuals.
Many of us however, can't do that even though it seems doable. For me, the perspective is mostly running from the world rather than facing it. Modern life, as crazy as it may seem, is a fertile ground to speed up one's spiritual evolution.
