Hello friends, how are you all? I hope everyone is well and healthy.
One of the most talked about topics of the present time is TikTok and short video content. Just a few seconds of video is now changing the thinking, behavior, and lifestyle of an entire generation. Its impact has been profound in Bangladesh as well, especially among the young people. Where before, young people used to read books, participate in sports, or spend time acquiring a skill, now they spend hours in front of the screen making and watching short videos.
With TikTok, YouTube shorts, Instagram reels, young people are now living in a new digital world. There are some good sides too. Many are gaining popularity and income by creating creative content. Some are entertaining the audience by creating humorous, musical, and informational videos. This side is positive, because it has given young people an opportunity to express themselves and has opened the door to new professions for many.
But the problem begins when this medium of entertainment creates excessive addiction. Today's teenagers are wasting time by just scrolling through videos for hours. As a result, they are losing touch with real life.
A major problem with TikTok culture is the competition for viewership and likes. Many young people are now creating indecent, irrelevant or obscene content just to increase followers. They secretly capture other people's BDOs, which has increased the incidence of moral degradation, family conflicts and social shame in society.
In addition, the excessive use of these short videos is wasting the attention of young people. They are losing focus on studies or work, their patience is decreasing, and some are even falling into the trap of comparison and jealousy and suffering from depression. Mental health experts say that this type of fast-paced entertainment reduces the brain's ability to maintain attention.
To get out of this situation, awareness is needed first. Families and educational institutions need to work together. Parents should build friendly relationships with their children and help them manage their time.
In addition, the government and society should also take responsibility. Digital literacy education, that is, training should be provided from the school level to increase online awareness. And content creators should also understand that the real purpose should be to give a responsible and positive message, not for popularity.
TikTok and short videos have entertained us on the one hand, but on the other hand, they have become a waste of time, moral degradation, and mental stress in the lives of many young people. Now is the time to find a balance. Technology should be used for knowledge, for inspiration, and not for it to control our lives.
If the young people of Bangladesh use these digital platforms consciously, these media can be the ladder to their development, creativity, and success. But if they drown in blind imitation and addiction, then this short video culture will diminish our generation, in thinking, behavior, and dreams of the future.
