Oh man, I miss the era of video game magazines. I still have a ton of them, though I think they're mostly from the 2000s. I don't think I even really noticed how many of them slowly stopped printing. It's like they just disappeared from shelves and I somehow didn't notice.
The best thing about them was the writing. So much more free. Not afraid to say their thoughts as there was no fear that a publisher would cut any ties with them. You can tell the digital side of the industry relies on its ties to game developers, not just for keys to review but also maintaining the flow of information in press releases.
