The first attempt was difficult because the control wasn't good for me. So I tried another race when I checked the control key and improved a bit, and managed to collect tokens along the way.
You need some fuel and have to wait until you can insist on some. Until then, you'll continue with the individual mode, practice more to be familiar with the route, and see if you need to buy some parts from the market.
