The Driftwood Memory
The sky remained perfectly blue as Anna and Erik walked farther down the stony shoreline, their steps now more certain, more shared. The silence between them had grown softer—no longer heavy with what had been lost, but tender with what might still be found.
As they rounded a slight bend in the beach, the path narrowed between the water’s edge and a steep rise of dry, wind-blown trees. There, tangled in time and tide, lay a great piece of driftwood—bleached silver by salt and sun, its roots twisted like frozen flame. Nature had sculpted it into something wild and strangely beautiful.
Anna paused, her gaze caught by it. She reached out and touched the smooth barkless surface. “Do you remember this?” she asked softly.
Erik stopped beside her. “Of course,” he said. “It washed up that summer we built the stone cairn together.”
“I thought it was a monster back then,” Anna smiled faintly, running her fingers along the curve of the root. “Like a sea creature stranded by its own sorrow.”
“You named it Ægir,” Erik said, grinning. “The old sea god. You said he’d guard the memories we left behind.”
She turned to face him, surprised. “You remembered that?”
“I remember everything about that day,” he said. “The way you laughed when you fell into the cold tide. How we dried off with your scarf because we forgot towels. And how we promised...”
He stopped, voice caught.
Anna finished for him, “That we’d come back here every year, no matter what.”
A gust of wind stirred the trees behind them, whistling gently through bare branches. The driftwood groaned softly, as if remembering too.
“I was afraid you’d forgotten,” she said.
“I didn’t forget,” Erik replied. “I just… stopped believing it still mattered. That we mattered.”
Anna’s eyes met his, steady. “And now?”
He took her hand slowly, hesitantly. “Now, standing here with you again... I know it still does.”
For a moment, they simply stood in the shadow of the driftwood, the stones around their feet warmed by sunlight and years. Then Erik knelt, picked up a small, smooth rock, and placed it gently within the gnarled roots of Ægir.
“A new promise,” he said.
Anna smiled and added her own stone beside his. “One we keep.”
They continued walking, their hands now intertwined. The shore stretched endlessly ahead, but for the first time in years, the distance didn’t feel daunting. It felt inviting—like a story waiting to be written.
Behind them, the driftwood stood watch, as it always had. Not just over the beach, but over a love that had once been lost to the tides of time—and now, gently, was finding its way back.
And so they walked on. Not chasing the past, but stepping into the future, pebble by pebble, promise by promise.
Well, that was what i wanted to share with you today... Hope that you enjoyed...
