Putin Is Loving This

Over the past few days, Russian news talk shows have consisted almost entirely of translated clips of Trump-administration officials and Trump surrogates—Vice President J. D. Vance, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and National Security Adviser Michael Waltz, among others—defending the president and attacking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Fox News. The interview clips were interspersed with video of the fateful meetingbetween Trump and Zelensky in the Oval Office last week, along with readings, in Russian, of Trump’s posts on Truth Social and Elon Musk’s posts on X, which is funnier than it sounds.
Soon after the Trump-Zelensky blowup, the Kremlin said that America’s foreign policy now “largely aligns with our vision.” Across three different news shows on the state-owned Channel One and Russia-1, which take their marching orders directly from Russian President Vladimir Putin, this cozy alignment was on full display. It seemed that Russian state TV, and Putin by extension, could not be more pleased with what has been happening…
Even when the shows’ panelists admitted to some nervousness about Trump’s next moves, they said his decision to cut off aid to Ukraine “raised our spirits,” as one guest put it. At times, they sounded like they were discussing a problematic friend who everyone agrees is crazy but who inadvertently did something useful.

Trump may have already planted the seeds of his political collapse

Over the last six weeks, President Trump has been spending political capital like a drunk at a casino who insists he’s got ‘a system.’ If history is any predictor, his second term trajectory may already be set — right off a cliff, pedal to the floor.

Trump’s tariff turbulence is worse than anyone imagined

Perhaps the biggest surprise of Mr Trump’s presidency so far is his apparent indifference to the downsides of his actions. Investors had thought that he viewed the stockmarket as a scorecard on his presidency. His concern with it has been replaced by a belief that tariffs are obviously good for the economy, since they will revitalise industry and create new government revenues. “There will be a little disturbance, but we are ok with that. It won’t be much,” he said on March 4th.
The president has also glibly dismissed the concerns of American farmers, who sell about a fifth of their total output abroad. They should “get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold inside of the United States”, he posted on Truth Social, his social-media platform, on March 3rd. In reality, none will pivot from growing soyabeans for export to planting avocado trees for domestic consumption.

Judge reinstates NLRB member Trump fired

A federal judge on Thursday reversed the firing of a National Labor Relations Board member by President Donald Trump, with a scathing ruling that said “an American president is not a king.”
The ordered reinstating former NLRB chair Gwynne Wilcoxcame a month after she sued to be returned to the board.
The President does not have the authority to terminate members of the National Labor Relations Board at will, and his attempt to fire plaintiff from her position on the Board was a blatant violation of the law,” Judge Beryl Howell wrote in the order Thursday in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

War heroes and military firsts are among 26,000 images flagged for removal in Pentagon’s DEI purge

References to a World War II Medal of Honor recipient, the Enola Gay aircraft that dropped an atomic bomb on Japan and the first women to pass Marine infantry training are among the tens of thousands of photos and online posts marked for deletion as the Defense Department works to purge diversity, equity and inclusion content, according to a database obtained by The Associated Press.

Oddly enough, years ago when I worked a civilian job at the St. Paul Army Corps of Engineers, Colonel Forrest T. Gay III was the District Engineer.

Obeying in advance is not a sign of a healthy democracy: Fearing Retribution, Trump Critics Muzzle Themselves

More than six weeks into the second Trump administration, there is a chill spreading over political debate in Washington and beyond.
People on both sides of the aisle who would normally be part of the public dialogue about the big issues of the day say they are intimidated by the prospect of online attacks from Mr. Trump and Elon Musk, concerned about harm to their companies and frightened for the safety of their families. Politicians fear banishment by a party remade in Mr. Trump’s image and the prospect of primary opponents financed by Mr. Musk, the president’s all-powerful partner and the world’s richest man.
