I really wanted to love this, because who doesn't love enemies turned to lovers kind of romance? But either my standards are too high, or I have been pretty unlucky lately when I choose to read a book with this trope, because it turns out that they aren't enemies and there is a spark from the first 10 pages.
I understand. It is not easy conveying pure dislike for it to change in a few pages into LOVE. But, I expect a bit more effort than seeing the tension from their first conversation. It is like everyone knows there is something going on, except Lucinda. And we keep hearing about their "battles", but the book never actually SHOWS them. It is definitely weird, because I like Lucinda as a character when she TALKS out loud, but seeing her thoughts kept ruining the experience for me, because it was
very often VERY opposite to her actual actions. I'm just not a big fan of big clueless characters.
Josh on the other hand... I can't find much fault in him. Sure, there are petty misunderstandings, etc. HOWEVER! The man is perfect in his imperfect ways. He somehow had a great balance between being a bit creepy and full-on, swoonworthy romantic interest. He gets my stamp of approval by the end of this and I like when they're together, as well. He and their conversations are what made me want to read to the end and enjoy it as much as possible.
The story, as I said, mainly focuses on Lucinda's viewpoint and her freak-outs. Of course it was never reaaaally about hating each other and it's pretty much about coming to terms with everything else... If only Lucinda made being human a bit better, haha. Nevertherless, it was fun after the middle. I have to admit the story was painfully painful for the first half, because, you know, a lot of things were TOO OBVIOUS and Lucinda is never the person to SEE that.
