That's interesting! Not coming from that culture it's not something I have ever observed but it does make sense. I think the tensions and disagreements are bound to happen in close family relationships especially if you are that close to our in laws!

It is nice it's own way, it keeps family close. Here the kids move out an onto their own lives. Sometimes you rarely get to see them depending where they are working. It's kind of sad to be honest, but it's life...

In India we live mostly in joint families, though the trends are changing now and couples prefer to separate out after wedding in to their individual space. But still there are many who cannot afford individual spaces and they have to live in joint families.
It has it's own pros and cons.
