Seeking freedom in a land of injustice

It's no stale news that my country, Nigeria, is known for their suppression of rights. I've been here way too long to know that we're years away from salvation. The endless cycle of citizen oppression, hunger, starvation, and low wages just keeps on revolving.

The streets are filled with beggars, the roads are incessantly occupied by hustlers who live day to day for survival while our inebriated, bloated politicians sit on the throne piling excessive wealth... something they may never be able to totally consume. Should I call it greed? Or perhaps sheer wickedness? I really don't know.

But amidst all this, the only solution is to speak up, to talk, to come out in public and air our opinions, express our disgust, voice our complaints to the ears of the world. But how can this be achieved when the very same people responsible for our plight and suffering take every possible measure to shut our mouths. The news outlets are paid, bribed and threatened to never speak against the government. The gory scenes that go down within the country are covertly obscured from the prying eyes of the universe. We try to speak but our voices are silenced, we try to fight but our lives are wasted. From whence does our help come from? What do we do next? Sleep on it? Or just accept our fate.

Some years back we protested against "SARS"(special anti-robbery response squad). They were a body meant to protect us from villains that upset the society's peaceful ambience, instead, they turned out to be more evil than the same people they were meant to deal with. Guess what? on the night of the protest, the government ordered the soldiers to shoot innocent citizens who held nothing but their placards in the air. Why would we be silenced for speaking against corruption and fighting for our rights? what happened to freedom of expression. How could love seem so close, yet far away.

To aggravate things, the Government denied allegations raised against them that people were murdered in cold blood. They covered up the whole incident and hid the lifeless bodies to cover up the evidence.

Oh Nigeria my country! thousands are unjustly buried underneath its soil, the struggles of our heroes have been all for naught, the darkness has obscured the bright smiles of our youths. Redemption seems so far off, bandits and terrorist organisations are given more privileges than we the peaceful citizens. The word "Freedom" has been obliterated from the dictionary of my once peaceful country.

We can't speak the truth no more, the condition of living worsens as each blessed day goes by. Food prices are hiked, law enforcement agents have been corrupted... and there's nothing we can say about this. Perhaps freedom is inexistent in reality or perhaps it's just my country.

Sometimes I wish I was born somewhere else, a place where crying voices are listened to, a place where lives are valued, a place where citizens do matter, a place where human rights exist. Maybe I happen to be here for a reason; or perhaps, in the end, we're all subject to the decision of fate.

This is my entry for the daily mayinleo prompts. #mayinleo

The Endsars incident made it glaring that we do not have good governance in this country, how can innocent people be killed like chickens and yet they denied their actions.

The worst nightmare ever. For a moment, I didn't believe the news until it was fully confirmed that it actually happened. It's quite sad
