A bit of Africa, jazz and history [eng/esp]

Some time ago I was able to visit one of the most iconic and musical places that animates the nightlife in the city of Havana, and that left me trapped with the magic of its music. I was talking about "The Fox and the Crow", located in the central 23rd avenue of Havana's Vedado. This is a place themed on the music of the jazz genre, and with a recognition and prestige that goes beyond the borders of the country.
The experience I lived was a delight, I am a lover of music of all kinds, but I have to admit that the musical genres where the instruments are more important than the lyrics, I find more relaxing and addictive.
Knowing this site motivated me to investigate about this genre of music, which in Cuba has managed to reach more public through international events such as the Jazz Plaza, which is held every year.

Hace algún tiempo pude visitar uno de los sitios más icónicos y musicales que anima la vida nocturna en la ciudad de La Habana, y que me dejó atrapada con la magia de su música. Les habló de "La Zorra y el Cuervo", ubicada en la céntrica avenida 23 del Vedado habanero. Este es un sitio tematizado en la música del género jazz, y con un reconocimiento y prestigio que traspasa las fronteras del país. La experiencia que viví fue una delicia, soy amante de la música de todo tipo, pero tengo que reconocer que los géneros musicales donde los instrumentos tienen mayor protagonismo que la letra, me resultan más relajantes y adictivos. Conocer este sitio me motivó a indagar sobre este género de música, que en Cuba ha logrado llegar a más público por eventos internacionales como el Jazz Plaza, que se celebra cada año.

That night I approached the manager of the place, who by the way is one of the most professional and kindest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He explained to me that jazz originated in New Orleans and that it has a very strong influence from African music. I learned that African music in our continent, America, began surrounded by pain because it was during the period of slavery. In Africa, its music had a religious and magical cut, with the presence of many chords that invited to dance in celebration and gratitude to their gods. Later this music was mixed with other western genres, and in this way jazz emerged, influencing both the rhythm and vocal techniques.

Esa noche me acerqué al administrador del lugar, que por cierto es una de las personas más profesionales y amables que he tenido el placer de conocer. Este me explicó que el jazz surgió en Nueva Orleans y que tiene una influencia muy fuerte de la música africana. Supe que la música africana en nuestro continente, América, comenzó rodeada de dolor porque fue durante el período de la esclavitud. En África, su música tenía un corte religioso y mágico, con presencia de muchos acordes que invitaban a bailar en celebración y agradecimiento a sus dioses. Luego esta música se fue mezclando con otros géneros occidentales, y de esta forma surgió el jazz, influyendo tanto en el ritmo como en las técnicas vocales.

I was happy and excited, wrapped between pianos, saxophones, drums; and listening to a story that is also a sign of resistance. At that time, jazz allowed musicians to express their African heritage, and to say No to silence through art.

Yo estaba feliz y emocionada, envuelta entre pianos, saxofones, baterías; y escuchando una historia que además es una muestra de resistencia. Y es que en aquella época el jazz permitió a los músicos expresar su herencia africana, y a decir No al silencio a través del arte.
