My deciding factor would be my destination, the weather, and probably the purpose of the trip.

Yes, the weather is always a key factor and dictates how bulky your baggage is.

Having everything in a small backpack makes my trip awesome. I don't worry about losing my things on the bus since my only backpack is always sitting on my lap.

I like that too, and when I do short journeys via coach, bus drivers sometimes get annoyed when I choose to keep my backpack with me.
