Sounds of Summer

Believe it or not, summer is right around the corner. Depending on who you talk to, it has potentially already started. A quick Google search tells us that the astronomical first day of summer is just about 15 days away on June 20th. Other people might tell you that summer officially starts on Memorial weekend here in the US.

Then again, if you ask any of the students here in the school district where I work, they might tell you that today is the first day of summer. More accurately, today is the last day of school, so for them (and most of the teachers) that brings a freedom that they look forward to all year.

I'm technically an administrator, so I have to work year round. Likewise, @mrsbozz is on a different contract than the teachers, so she has to work a bit longer than them as well. Make no mistake, although she isn't here, her summer days will be filled with preparations for the coming school year.

It's not all fun and games being off during the summer.

Except when it is!

We have a number of trips that I am looking forward to this summer. In fact, I can hardly believe that our big one is less than a month away. I'm still trying to work out the logistics of how I can keep posting while I am away from my office.

All technicalities aside, with the temperature set to hit 90 degrees today (F), there is little doubt that summer is finally here. Due to that fact, my theme for this weeks #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze is going to be summer songs.

I've gotta start with this song even though I don't live in the city really. "Summer In The City" from 1966 by the Lovin' Spoonful is a song that you can't help but associate with summer. I mean it's all in the title right. Besides summer, this song will always be associated with Die Hard for me.

I still remember sitting in the theater and watching Die Hard With a Vengeance (3) for the first time. You have to admit, they did a really good job with the opening credits on that one. I'm kind of a wuss when it comes to jump scares, so I am pretty sure I flew out of my chair during the pivotal point of the opening.

If you have seen the movie, you know what I mean.

If you haven't seen it, there you go, at least now you know what I am talking about. Do yourself a favor and watch the rest of the movie too. It's honestly pretty good. Plus Samuel L Jackson, need I say more?

For the second song today, let's fast forward a little bit to 1970. Ah, what can I say about Mungo Jerry? I think most of us would be hard pressed to name a single other song that was by them besides "In The Summertime". I mean check out those mutton chops. He actually reminds me a bit of Lawrence Fishburn a little bit. Are you seeing it too?

This song is just a fun jam and it always seems to put people in a decent mood. This might actually be one of the first examples of beat boxing to reach commercial success. Don't hold me to that fact though, I could be totally wrong.

All of the funky sounds just give this song that something unique that makes it stick with you. Plus it just has a good message... It doesn't matter what you do in the summer, just as long as you are happy. Make sure to have a good time over the next few months. If you are working too hard, your not doing it right!

Finally, we are going to fast forward to 1991 when rap music was actually good and Will Smith wasn't an epic douchebag. It's actually a bit sad to watch this video for me because Will Smith used to be one of my favorite actors and artist. I watched The Fresh Prince of Bel Air from the first episode to the last.

Independence Day and I Robot are a couple of my favorite movies that I always find myself stopping on when I see them on TV. In fact, I can quote pretty much every line in Independence Day at this point in my life.

Before people were treated to images of the White House blowing up, Will Smith was the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff were bringing us awesome jams like Summertime. Even after Smith went solo he was producing some decent tunes that got you moving. Anyone ready to get "jiggy" with it?

I don't think this is the first time I have shared this song for one of these posts, but it's hard to write about the summer and not include this song. It would almost be sacrilegious or something like that.

That's it, that's all I've got for you today. I hope you enjoyed those songs and I hope you have an awesome summer!

I love the Die Hard movies! I watched 'em all like a marathon some years ago and it was fun. Don't remember much of the music so I never noticed that song. Lol.

It's one of my favorite series for sure!

Some fun stuff in there! Loved the Die Hard clip! I'm not sure if I saw that one in the theatre or not, it's been so long! I hope you get some time away from work this summer, administrators work year round no matter where you work!

Yeah, I am taking a couple weeks at the end of this month and then I have some weekend trips planned. It was a really great movie. I was just watching it on TV again the other day.

Summer has just begun.
I will hope that I will have time to create some incredible photos.

I hope so too. I think it's going to be a great season!

Welcome to (Miami) summer! Tried to reference ol’ willy there.. heh

Some great tracks man! I’m gonna dip into the summer tracks towards the end of the summer I think. I always think of Summertime Sadness or Dog Days are Over when I’m trying to list out some summer tracks and forget there’s so many more!

Man, summer in the city is definitely an amazing classic!

Yeah, there are a lot of different directions I could have went on this one. I just wanted something fun and upbeat to get us all in the mood for the coming months!

Those sideburns! The sideburns!! Those are great songs. And sideburns!

Indeed they are!

Very different styles of tunes…..

Yeah, I like a little bit of everything.
