Is your favorite Hive node running the PeakD plugin?

Sadly, I had grown all too familiar with the screen above. I would actually rage hit the refresh button hoping for a different outcome, but it always remained the same. It's actually been going on for quite some time now and just when things would get better, they would get worse again.

I've written a number of posts about it already, and after being a bit of a pest in the @peakd Discord server, I was finally given an answer a little over a week ago.

Apparently, there is a piece of software that node operators need to be running for the lists feature to work in PeakD. If you want to see my original post with a link to what I think is the piece of software, you can find it here.

When the "Favorites" feed was not working on PeakD, I tried using the Ecency front end. I love the mobile app, but their "favorites" feature works a little differently than the one on PeakD, so I didn't find it quite as useful.

I still use the Ecency mobile app daily and I love it. I just use it differently than I use PeakD at work.

Remember when the HIVESQL service went down due to the compromised account? There was some speculation at the time that the favorites feed was not working because HIVESQL was down. While that may have been part of the issue, the favorites feed had been spotty at best even before that. It was pretty clear to me the issues were deeper than just HIVESQL being down.

As I said above, it turns out it's just the fact that not all node operators are running the plugin.

I got a nice reply the other day from @arcange that they are in fact running the plugin and their node was in the process of being rebuilt, so that is part of the reason it hasn't been working lately. I'm not sure what other nodes are or aren't running it. It might be cool if there was a way to see that on the witness page. Again, I still really haven't gotten clarification if witnesses and node operators are different things.

As I said in my post on Friday, there are hundreds of witnesses, but only about seven to ten nodes you can choose from in PeakD settings.

I honestly can't tell you how happy I am to have the favorites feed working again. I tried just using my following feed and while it had some benefits, it also had some huge drawbacks. In fact, being forced into not having the favorites feed has made me rethink a bit how I handle curation.

If you are like me, you probably have hundreds if not thousands of accounts on your following list. That gives you a lot of stuff to sift through when you are looking for specific posts from specific people each day.

I feel like I lost a lot of time scrolling each day while the favorites feed was down. On the flip side of that, I feel like I was curating a wider range of people than I usually do, so that is not a bad thing. I think I need to make a concerted effort to flip through the following feed more frequently, even if I still spend the majority of my time in my favorites feed.

I'm not sure what is involved with getting the plugin installed, but if you have the ear of your favorite node runner, I would ask you to encourage them to get the plugin installed. I can't imagine there would be too many drawbacks to installing it.

What do I know though!

Do you use the favorites feed? Have you been through the same frustrations as I have over the past several months?

I'll try to make this the last time I post about this for a while! I promise!

Witness is different from node operator, but maybe many run both? I'm not sure, nor do I know in detail. @josephsavage has mentioned starting a node a few times (I think; forgive me if I'm wrong about that, Joseph) so maybe he can give us some insight.

Anyway, that's interesting that it comes down to one piece of software that most people don't run. I wonder why it depends on that. I've never really used the favorites feature before. I should explore it.

I don't think the favorites list is for everyone. It can keep you from seeing certain things if you live there. Like I said, I realized I need to venture out a bit more. It's super useful for catching up on key people when you are off chain for the weekend or a given amount of time.

I have indeed thought about it a few times. Most of the top witnesses also run full RPC nodes, but it's not required. If I ever run a witness it would be to run a node and try to capture a little value for it, so it would be both.

Thanks for update it helps when you need quick explanation as to what the hell is going on right now.... 🙃

No problem. That's what I was told anyway. I can only trust what the team tells me.

I don't use favourites and lists much, but these things ought to working for all nodes. I've noticed in another dapp that solve nodes don't show all the account stats. I get that running a node is a bigger job, but we need everyone to have a good Hive experience.

I totally agree. If they are getting paid to perform this service, then it should be working correctly.

I'm not sure how nodes get funded if it's different to what witnesses get. We don't vote directly for nodes, but they tend to be run by witnesses.

My assumption is if you run a node you are probably a witness and more than likely a top 20 witness at that, so they are getting paid to some degree.

It's going to have some costs. As Hive grows that will go up.

When I used it today, still the favorite is not yet available. 😪

I think you have to refresh it a couple of times.

Thank you for the information. 😊😊

I always go onto the most viewed posts to see whats going on but the same posts keep popping up. Some are years old. So I just switch to following feed and sift through the butterfly photos for some decent content,

It's definitely a bit flakey at times. Not a great look for us when we are trying to bring in more people.

well at least the price is on the way north again.

For sure!

I've run into the issue as well, it seems that all the front ends have been having their issues as of late. It's good that the favorites is up again though, because the feed really does make it easier to find what I want. I checked this morning and it was working plus Hive was over forty cents. Not a bad morning!

Yes, that is a good morning. Today on the other hand has seemed pretty slow. Things were really pumping over the weekend, but is seems they have cooled down a bit.

Curation is interesting on Hive. I have learnt to cut right back on who I follow, so often my favourites are the ones I am following.
The nodes though, yeah I kept chopping and changing to finds one to work.
I use a variety of front ends and find that there is usually something not working on each one to be honest. Glad you have the favourites feed back though!

Thanks, I'm happy it's back up and running too. I know that cutting back on my following is an option, but I don't like putting people through that. It's a bit of an emotional thing when you see that someone has unfollowed you. At least for some people.
