Sadly, I had grown all too familiar with the screen above. I would actually rage hit the refresh button hoping for a different outcome, but it always remained the same. It's actually been going on for quite some time now and just when things would get better, they would get worse again.
I've written a number of posts about it already, and after being a bit of a pest in the @peakd Discord server, I was finally given an answer a little over a week ago.
Apparently, there is a piece of software that node operators need to be running for the lists feature to work in PeakD. If you want to see my original post with a link to what I think is the piece of software, you can find it here.
When the "Favorites" feed was not working on PeakD, I tried using the Ecency front end. I love the mobile app, but their "favorites" feature works a little differently than the one on PeakD, so I didn't find it quite as useful.
I still use the Ecency mobile app daily and I love it. I just use it differently than I use PeakD at work.
Remember when the HIVESQL service went down due to the compromised account? There was some speculation at the time that the favorites feed was not working because HIVESQL was down. While that may have been part of the issue, the favorites feed had been spotty at best even before that. It was pretty clear to me the issues were deeper than just HIVESQL being down.
As I said above, it turns out it's just the fact that not all node operators are running the plugin.
I got a nice reply the other day from @arcange that they are in fact running the plugin and their node was in the process of being rebuilt, so that is part of the reason it hasn't been working lately. I'm not sure what other nodes are or aren't running it. It might be cool if there was a way to see that on the witness page. Again, I still really haven't gotten clarification if witnesses and node operators are different things.
As I said in my post on Friday, there are hundreds of witnesses, but only about seven to ten nodes you can choose from in PeakD settings.
I honestly can't tell you how happy I am to have the favorites feed working again. I tried just using my following feed and while it had some benefits, it also had some huge drawbacks. In fact, being forced into not having the favorites feed has made me rethink a bit how I handle curation.
If you are like me, you probably have hundreds if not thousands of accounts on your following list. That gives you a lot of stuff to sift through when you are looking for specific posts from specific people each day.
I feel like I lost a lot of time scrolling each day while the favorites feed was down. On the flip side of that, I feel like I was curating a wider range of people than I usually do, so that is not a bad thing. I think I need to make a concerted effort to flip through the following feed more frequently, even if I still spend the majority of my time in my favorites feed.
I'm not sure what is involved with getting the plugin installed, but if you have the ear of your favorite node runner, I would ask you to encourage them to get the plugin installed. I can't imagine there would be too many drawbacks to installing it.
What do I know though!
Do you use the favorites feed? Have you been through the same frustrations as I have over the past several months?
I'll try to make this the last time I post about this for a while! I promise!
