Collaborate and Listen

Throughout the history of the world, there are some pretty epic collaborations. Peanut butter and chocolate is the first one that comes to mind. Beer and Burgers is another one. Really beer and just about anything to be honest. If you are a Forrest Gump fan you might say peas and carrots, but as far as I am concerned... barf!

It doesn't stop at food either. There are plenty of great collaborations throughout history. Once upon a time we had Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Plus, who can forget all of the great comic duos in the history of the world. Sports brings a fair share of amazing collaborations as well. Jerry Rice and Joe Montana is one of the most prominent for me. I guess I am showing my age a bit there. Mahomes and Kelce, is that one new enough for you?

Finally, we shouldn't forget music. It's Tuesday in case you haven't noticed and as opposed to throwing out some Irish Jigs since St. Patrick's day was just yesterday, I am going to head a different direction. Based on the title of this post you might think this #threetunetuesday post sponsored by @ablaze is going to be something in the realm of Vanilla Ice.

Wrong!

I'm not really sure how much collaboration he did besides saying the word in Ice Ice Baby. No, today I am going to be talking about what I feel are some of the greatest collaborations from a particular period of time. More specifically from a certain group of people during a particular period of time.

That's right, I am talking about none other than the Bee Gees. You totally knew that didn't you? It would be very easy for me to just throw out some of their songs on here and have you reminisce about just how great they were, but instead, I am going to share some of the songs that they wrote, but someone else recorded. That doesn't mean they didn't join in a little with backing vocals and that sort of thing though.

In fact, if you take the time to listen to each of these songs, you will hear their fingerprints before you even hear one of their voices. It's pretty impressive how much of a mark they made on their music and the careers of others.

This is the song that actually got me thinking about the theme for this post today. I was driving home from work and this absolute classic by Dionne Warwick came on the radio. Some might not realize before she launched the psychic friends network and became the butt of oh so many jokes she was a pretty fantastic singer. In fact, if it weren't for her success as a singer, we likely never would have been blessed with the psychic friends network at all.

Obviously, the hammer doesn't drop until you get to the chorus of this song and you suddenly hear that blessed falsetto from our beloved brothers Gibb. If you actually listen to the song though, you will find that the lyrics are actually pretty deep as well. If you can get past the whole disco thing, the Bee Gees actually wrote some pretty insightful songs.

Given that falsetto that I mentioned before, it isn't surprising that a majority of the songs the Bee Gees shopped out were picked up by female artists. In fact, as I got through the list the only original songs that were covers that were sung by someone other than the Bee Gees were sung by women. With a couple of exceptions. The first being "Grease" by Frankie Valli and let's be honest. Frankie's voice was so high, he was basically a woman anyway right? The other song I am going to talk about in a little bit.

Right now, it's all about Babs. I never really appreciated Barbra Streisand when I was younger. I mean sure, I knew she had a great voice, but I never really paid much attention to her music. You might be surprised to find that she actually had two collaborations with Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees. "Guilty" is the first one I am going to cover and probably my favorite of the two. "Woman in love" is a good song, but I don't feel it is as good as this one.

Plus this is #threetunetuesday and if I shared four songs then I don't know what day I would have to post this on!

Finally, I am going to finish this off with this amazing classic by Samantha Sang (written by the Bee Gees). Sure, I could have thrown out "Islands In The Stream" since they wrote that too, and it wasn't entirely performed by a woman as I discussed before. I did forget to mention that Andy Gibb did a number of Bee Gees written songs on his own, but again, let's be honest, that really doesn't count.

"Emotion" is a song that I seriously thought was performed by The Bee Gees pretty much all of my life. It wasn't until just a few years ago that I realize it was actually sung by Samantha Sang. I mean listen to it. If you weren't watching the video you would think that the Bee Gees were singing it wouldn't you? Sure, they probably did some backing vocals, but honestly, this feels a lot like one of those Milli Vanilli moments doesn't it?

I don't think anyone would have been shocked to find that Samantha Sang was lip syncing the whole time and it was 100% the Bee Gees. Actually, people would probably be more likely to say "who is Samantha Sang? I thought the Bee Gees sang that song".

Actually, no offense to Miss Sang, but the name even sounds fake doesn't it? I can just imagine the discussion that happened:

"How can we really make people believe this lady is singing this song?, I know, let's say her name is Samantha Sang, then they have to believe she is actually singing it!".

I'll let you be the judge!

Great stuff, the Gibb brothers ended up on many 80's collaborations, Chain Reaction / Diana Ross.. springs to mind.

That was on my list, but didn't make the cut. I thought it might be too obscure for most people.

You are joking right? 😀..

What do you mean? I don't think that song was super popular here. In fact, I just went and listened to it and I don't think I have ever heard that Diana Ross song before in my life.

Hehe.. it was a smash here, #1 for a while too!

Ah, that explains it! I wasn't visiting many dance clubs as a small child back then!

Interestingly.. 'Guilty' was only a minor hit here, but still got my attention in 1980. I see it was a lot more successful on your side.

Interesting that Woman in Love did so well across the board.

I laugh that I know that store front lol. Cheers to the mitten.

Gotta love the Meijer pharmacy drive through!

I listened to these yesterday and got distracted before responding. Losing my focus it seems! All great songs were great, and some nice falsettos. The Bee Gees produced a lot of great music! Islands in the stream would have been an easy one I agree. Samantha Sang I was not familiar with at all. The name sounds so fake... Had they put Seng the could claim in was Asian.

Thanks for the deep dive there, some songs that I wasn't all that familiar with!

I'm glad you enjoyed it and found some stuff you hadn't heard before. I agree with you on the whole Seng thing. It appears she is originally from Australia, but I maybe would have guessed Philipino or something. It does appear she has some Chinese descendancy.
