I recently did a bit of computer work for a friend of mine. When it came time to accept payment for said work, he told me he had something very special for me. As the manager at a "party store", he has direct access to the liquor vendors in the state. That means he occasionally gets first dibs on bottles that you might not find in grocery store.
Usually, when I have him source whiskeys for me, I am happy to pay him for whatever bottle he acquires. In this case, Crown Royal Blackberry wasn't even on my radar until he mentioned it. Apparently, in Michigan is difficult to get your hands on these days. Lucky for me, he was able to snag a bottle and he wanted to give it to me as payment. Never one to turn down whiskey, I was happy to accept. Full disclosure, he did give me a bit of cash for my work as well.
It's only recently that "Crown" has started to dive into the flavored whisky market. Canadians leave the "E" out like the folks across the ocean do. I'm personally, not really a fan of flavored whisky's, but since it was free, I was happy to give this a try.
Blackberry is the newest flavor and now sits alongside their apple, peach, and vanilla offerings.
I'll be honest, on first taste, it reminded me a lot of cough syrup. My friend suggested I mix it with some lemonade and after giving the flavors a bit of time to meld, I found it to be quite refreshing and enjoyable.
I probably won't go buying a bottle of this myself (assuming I can even find it), but since it was free, I'm not going to let it go to waste. It's just interesting how things like whisky can fetch such a premium. I've heard talk of people investing in bottles of Scotch that they may never lay eyes on let alone taste. It's crazy to me. Kind of like this magical Internet money we are all so fond of!
It is time again for another Finance Friday/Friday Finance. This is a series I started where I talk about random bits of financial stuff that I have seen, gathered, or experienced during the week. I hope as a reader you find it informational, entertaining, or both. I also hope it can generate some good discussion and edify the community.
HBD
I recently did a fairly big withdraw from my HBD savings account. Pretty big for me I guess I should say, but with the recent drop of HIVE to $.16 or whatever it was, it made me realize I might want to have a bit more HBD liquid to move into HIVE when the time is right.
The three day unlock isn't a bad thing, but if you want to make moves quickly, it becomes a bit of a problem. I'm definitely going to miss that 20% interest on the HBD I pulled out, but hopefully down the road it will payoff for me when the price of HIVE finally recovers.
I haven't done anything with it yet, but I am thinking about putting in some limit orders to buy at $.15, $.13, and maybe $.10. Those seem like pretty reasonable price points for HIVE to me. I've heard there is a lot of resistance at the $.13 level, so that $.10 might be a pipe dream, but we will see.
I just know a lot of times the price drops when I am busy sleeping, so I don't want to miss those opportunities like I have in the past.
FSM
One of my favorite (I only own two) silver mining stocks had one of their regular meetings the other day and they announced a profit per share of $.10 per share. It's not a huge amount, but anything on the positive side is alright with me. Fortuna Silver Mines (FSM) has been a really good hold for me. I bought most of my shares at $1 or something like that and sold a bit when it hit $10 per share to recover my initial investment.
It's now sitting around the $5 mark which isn't great, but it's still up from where I bought it at $1 or $2, I honestly can't remember. With the continued demand for silver in the electronics and other industries, I think that Fortuna is going to continue to make a profit for me.
Barring some decline in silver demand or a major environmental mishap on their part, I think it is a good hold. You should do your own research of course! I'm the last person you want giving you financial advice.
That's all I've got for this Friday. I hope you enjoy the remainder of the Olympic games. I'll be camping this weekend unless we have to rush home to sit with @diamonddave and his family in the hospital. Right now it is just a waiting game.
