As good as gold?

I recently did a bit of computer work for a friend of mine. When it came time to accept payment for said work, he told me he had something very special for me. As the manager at a "party store", he has direct access to the liquor vendors in the state. That means he occasionally gets first dibs on bottles that you might not find in grocery store.

Usually, when I have him source whiskeys for me, I am happy to pay him for whatever bottle he acquires. In this case, Crown Royal Blackberry wasn't even on my radar until he mentioned it. Apparently, in Michigan is difficult to get your hands on these days. Lucky for me, he was able to snag a bottle and he wanted to give it to me as payment. Never one to turn down whiskey, I was happy to accept. Full disclosure, he did give me a bit of cash for my work as well.

It's only recently that "Crown" has started to dive into the flavored whisky market. Canadians leave the "E" out like the folks across the ocean do. I'm personally, not really a fan of flavored whisky's, but since it was free, I was happy to give this a try.

Blackberry is the newest flavor and now sits alongside their apple, peach, and vanilla offerings.

I'll be honest, on first taste, it reminded me a lot of cough syrup. My friend suggested I mix it with some lemonade and after giving the flavors a bit of time to meld, I found it to be quite refreshing and enjoyable.

I probably won't go buying a bottle of this myself (assuming I can even find it), but since it was free, I'm not going to let it go to waste. It's just interesting how things like whisky can fetch such a premium. I've heard talk of people investing in bottles of Scotch that they may never lay eyes on let alone taste. It's crazy to me. Kind of like this magical Internet money we are all so fond of!

It is time again for another Finance Friday/Friday Finance. This is a series I started where I talk about random bits of financial stuff that I have seen, gathered, or experienced during the week. I hope as a reader you find it informational, entertaining, or both. I also hope it can generate some good discussion and edify the community.

HBD

I recently did a fairly big withdraw from my HBD savings account. Pretty big for me I guess I should say, but with the recent drop of HIVE to $.16 or whatever it was, it made me realize I might want to have a bit more HBD liquid to move into HIVE when the time is right.

The three day unlock isn't a bad thing, but if you want to make moves quickly, it becomes a bit of a problem. I'm definitely going to miss that 20% interest on the HBD I pulled out, but hopefully down the road it will payoff for me when the price of HIVE finally recovers.

I haven't done anything with it yet, but I am thinking about putting in some limit orders to buy at $.15, $.13, and maybe $.10. Those seem like pretty reasonable price points for HIVE to me. I've heard there is a lot of resistance at the $.13 level, so that $.10 might be a pipe dream, but we will see.

I just know a lot of times the price drops when I am busy sleeping, so I don't want to miss those opportunities like I have in the past.

FSM

One of my favorite (I only own two) silver mining stocks had one of their regular meetings the other day and they announced a profit per share of $.10 per share. It's not a huge amount, but anything on the positive side is alright with me. Fortuna Silver Mines (FSM) has been a really good hold for me. I bought most of my shares at $1 or something like that and sold a bit when it hit $10 per share to recover my initial investment.

It's now sitting around the $5 mark which isn't great, but it's still up from where I bought it at $1 or $2, I honestly can't remember. With the continued demand for silver in the electronics and other industries, I think that Fortuna is going to continue to make a profit for me.

Barring some decline in silver demand or a major environmental mishap on their part, I think it is a good hold. You should do your own research of course! I'm the last person you want giving you financial advice.

That's all I've got for this Friday. I hope you enjoy the remainder of the Olympic games. I'll be camping this weekend unless we have to rush home to sit with @diamonddave and his family in the hospital. Right now it is just a waiting game.

How about participating in #beersaturday tomorrow? I am sure you can also run into a great pint or two ;)

I only brought liquor on my camping trip this weekend!

Well, Beer Saturday can happen any day of the week ;) That's one part of its magic :)

Free whisky is never a bad thing!

Certainly not!

I'm never one to turn down whiskey either! I've never been a big Crown fan, but it's not bad. Interesting combo though, blackberry. I guess I'm just a traditionalist when it comes to whiskey, I like the true flavor without the fruity flavors. Call me old fashioned!

I bought some Hive cheap from HBD I had liquid. But the three days makes it hard to snap things up as quickly as one might like. I hope you can get some if it dips again!

I hope so too and I totally agree with you. I will take my whiskey au naturale

I have taken to liking Bourbon myself!

I've heard of that brand, but I have never had it before.

I still have to open this one.

Oh, that's the Bob Dylan one isn't it? I haven't tried it yet. I didn't realize they were doing multiple offerings now!

It looks delicious!

Great mining stock picks. I need to do a bit meter of selling when stuff is in profit.

It's the only one I have done that for!

Nice! Yeah the berry whiskeys go well with lemonade.

My favorite is a huckleberry whiskey lemonade from Edge. Delicious!

That certainly does sound interesting!

Not into the flavored myself either. My wife likes the Peach.
I am however a HUGE fan of the Crown Black. If you've never tried that, give it a whirl. I'm very spoiled for the others now.

I will definitely see if I can get my hands on a bottle.

For me the flavoured whiskies tend towards being a bit sweet and syrupy, so to drink either as a small aperitif or a with a mixer.

Jim Beam used to do their Black Cherry at full strength and that was a pleasant drink over ice, but they've since dropped it to the 32.5-35% range and it's like the rest.

Blackberry sounds an interesting one to try, but I think getting it for free as you did is the best way to carry out the experiment.

Those are great observations. I agree with it being a bit too sweet.

My 'Cuz' stacks a few brands of liquor with his gold. He doesn't drink a lot but they turn out to be always in demand and tends to keep it's value no matter the economy.

That's awesome! I have a bottle right now that I bought for $65 and I could probably sell it for over $100. I'd rather drink it!

I'm not sure I've tried any flavoured whiskies. Maybe some people prefer it. Did you see the HBD APR dropped? A few people are not happy about that, but they've had it good for a long time.

I was putting HBD in savings when it was below 10%, so I don't mind so much. It sucks sure, but where else can you get 15% return? I'll likely keep growing mine minus whatever I take out to buy HIVE dips.

I prefer the non flavored whiskey, but few I tried aren't not bad.

Cinnamon and even the green apple. Now I want try this blackberry one.

And did you see, now HBD APR dropped to 15%. I think you got the right time to withdraw from savings...

I also bought some Hive and powered up.

But would like those 20%.

Maybe we need to review others spending and jeep it little more time at 20.

Yeah, some of them are weird. People love the new peanut butter whiskey, but it just isn't my jam. 15% is still better than pretty much anything you can get in the traditional world. I'm not too salty about the decrease.

to me, cant be too sweet, then i'm good.

good to know, i'm going to search for it. but at least the bootle is beautiful, you can pour your favorite whisky and reuse!

It is a nice bottle and you get a cloth pouch with it.
