Remember last week when I said that a team from Texas would win the Women's College World Series? Well, it turns out I was right. Never mind the fact that both teams in the title game were from Texas... However, do you also remember when I said that I thought Texas was the better team?
Turns out I was right.
Now, I know that is a bit of a loaded statement. The fact is, Texas Tech might actually be the better team, but we will never know because of how they were managed this past season. I think they definitely have a lot of talent in their ranks, but putting the weight of the world on NiJaree Canady's shoulders night after night is not the way you win championships.
I think/hope Texas Tech realizes that now. Friday night was Canady's third night in a row pitching for the Red Raiders and she may have put on a brave face, but you could tell she was a big gassed. Texas took full advantage of it putting up more runs than we have seen in the past several rounds of the tournament. The final score was Texas 10, Texas Tech 4 thanks in large part to a grand slam home run by the magnificent Mia Scott.
Personally, I was okay with either team winning the title since neither of them have ever had that distinction. @mrsbozz on the other hand was leaning more towards Texas Tech since this was their first ever trip to the tournament. Texas on the other hand has been her before, but sadly the two times they made it to the Championship series, they fell short and walked home with second place.
For me, it was a little bit of pride that pushed me towards cheering for Texas. I did say I thought they were the better team after all. It would be embarrassing if I turned out to be wrong!
We actually thought it was going to be a short night when Texas went up 10 to 0 on Texas Tech and going into the fifth inning the run rule was in effect. Texas Tech battled back though and snatched the three runs they needed to take the run rule off the table. From there it was just a matter of whether or not Kavan could hold her pitching on the Texas side of things and keep Texas Tech below 10 runs.
While Texas was the big winner of the tournament, I think all of us watching were winners too. We got to see some really great softball and a fantastic culminating series. What more can you ask for?!
