I was sitting at my parents house visiting with them on Sunday morning when I got a text message from one of my good friends wishing me well. I told him thank you and then I got a reply from him saying "you wanna throw?". If you are familiar with the sport of disc golf, you probably know that means he was asking me if I wanted to play a round.
I actually had a lot of stuff to get done the rest of the day on Sunday, but life is fleeting, and when your buddy asks you if you want to go play a round of disc golf, you say yes (as long as your wife is okay with it). I finished spending time with my parents and then rushed home to get some things done before I met up with him at the course.
It was actually a really great round for me. You might wonder what the title of this post has to do with all of this, so let me explain. My friend and I both lost discs on the course. His was in some really thick grass, and we couldn't quite figure out why we couldn't find it. I have a feeling either the lawn mower will eventually find it or someone will snag it. My disc I think I just left somewhere. Luckily, I have my name (bozz) on my disc and my Google Voice phone number. Hopefully I get a call from someone finding it and wanting to return it.
That doesn't always happen though, sometimes people just claim finders keepers and you never see them again.
Despite losing those two discs, I seem to have also found something at least so far this year. I'm talking about my game. I didn't play horrible last year, but looking back, I was definitely struggling with my game. Things just weren't clicking like they have in the past and despite me playing more than I have in quite some time last year, my season was kind of disappointing.
I'm not going to assume this year is always going to be better, but at least so far it has been. I finished with a 4 over par yesterday which as you can see is the best round I have ever had on this course. I also beat my friend by three strokes (not that we compete against each other), something that hasn't happened for a couple of years now.
I've been working on my footwork which is a huge piece of getting your drive right. You want to be able to use tangential or centrifugal(?) force to kind of sling shot the disc away from you. The more you can get your hips into the throw versus just your arm, the further the disc will go.
It's taken me about twenty years to get it right, but I feel like things are finally clicking for me a bit. We will see if I can keep it up through the rest of the summer. I have a feeling I have a horrible round or two ahead of me and only time will tell if that gives me the "yips" or not.
For now, I am just going to enjoy my awesome round yesterday and look forward to playing again soon!
