Blockout/BlockParty 2024

If you're not on social media much, you may not have heard of #blockout2024 or #blockparty2024. Basically, people are blocking celebrities and their companies on social media.

There are two schools of thought on this tactic: one side is only blocking celebrities who haven't spoken up or done anything for Palestine, and then when/if they do, they forgive them and unblock/refollow.

The other side (I'm on this team) thinks it should be permanent blocking, because a) we need to stop celebrity worship culture altogether in order to change society. It's the "circus" part of "bread and circuses," only these days there's no bread, only circuses. We need to stop being distracted by rich assholes who don't care about you or anyone, only their own wealth and power and influence. We need to support each other, support indie musicians and artists and so on who are struggling to survive and making amazing content that hasn't been run through some corporate filter to be useful to empire. We need to stop giving our time, money, and attention to the "elite" who serve only the interests of the super rich. And b) if Palestine is your only reason for this movement, which fair enough, someone feeling pressured by this to finally say "hey yeah genocide isn't ok" still doesn't care? They just care about their image and following. Them sharing a GoFundMe when they themselves could fund all the GoFundMes is further proof that they don't really care, or they would be putting their money where their mouth is. They are doing damage control, it's all PR (public relations), their image, their follower count. I don't think that should be rewarded, either, do you?

free them all.jpg
that's Palestine, Sudan, Congo, top to bottom

Even if you didn't follow the celebrities before (I generally don't follow celebs myself), block them anyway if you're for this, because it still will bork their numbers, especially their ads. Going to their page tells the algo that you are looking for that content, and then you block that content. The algo might try serving you related content - say you block an American football player, then it might serve you other NFL content, and you can block that too. It's wasting the ad dollars on someone who is just going to ignore it.

Another tactic I've seen people mention is, if you go to the store of their company, like the Kardashians have all their clothes and makeup companies and such, and fill up a shopping cart online and then abandon it? That really messes with their ad dollars, because any time you abandon a cart their ad dollars will go into overdrive trying to advertise to you to lure you back - again denying them revenue and wasting their marketing dollars, by serving the ads to you instead of someone who might actually buy.

ariana signed a thing.jpg
just days after this all started becoming a movement, I was double checking that I had blocked Ariana Grande who had landed on multiple block lists, and saw this fan group that showed she had SUDDENLY signed an open letter calling for a ceasefire. Feeling the pressure

The List

So my list started off just by looking at other people's recommended blocks, but then I found this article detailing everyone who went to the "let them eat cake" Met Gala, and I took the time to go through making a list of everyone in that article and blocking them too, so I thought I would share that list with y'all because it took some time. So the first names are not necessarily Met Gala names, though some were also Met Gala attendees as I found out later (which is why I was double checking that I had blocked Ariana Grande); they're the names I was picking up from other people doing the block party, and then I started adding people from the Met Gala article.

It's powerful to see this movement calling out celebrity culture and focusing on real issues like Palestine. Supporting indie artists and rejecting the distraction of the rich and famous really..👌 cool We need more awareness like this dear

It frustrates me when people bury their heads in the sand about something as serious as Palestine, Congo, and Sudan. I understand sometimes you need a break because it's difficult to watch and feel so much grief, but some people just refuse to see it or say anything at all.
Like someone said, when people wonder what they would have done during WWII, they're doing it now.

You're absolutely right dearest friend, we really shouldn't ignore the wrongs going on in these places.... I wish there was more help and support sent there...

Celebrity worship is an act that we all should stop. There is no doubt that celebrities are popular and we love them but worshipping them like mini gods is really bad.
Some people can’t even focus on their lives because of how much they love some celebrities…
Happy blocking😅

It really is unhealthy imo how obsessed some people are with it. Like I might enjoy someone's work but I don't care who they date or what they wear, yanno?
