Ayer en la mañana,aprovechando que aún que sol no estaba arriba y por lo tanto el día no tan caliente. Decidí acompañar a mi novio a visitar el conuco de su tío Cancio. Un señor de unos 82 años, lleno de energía y vitalidad, que a pesar de los años y de haber superado algunas enfermedades y recaídas recientemente, sigue activo en el campo, sembrando y cuidando sus plantas con amor y dedicación. La visita a su conuco fue una experiencia que me llenó de inspiración y gratitud al ver el trabajo tan duro que esto conyeba y que gracias a personas que se dedican a esta labor todos podemos comer.
Yesterday morning, taking advantage of the fact that the sun was not yet up and therefore the day was not so hot. I decided to accompany my boyfriend to visit his uncle Cancio's conuco. A man of about 82 years old, full of energy and vitality, who despite the years and having overcome some illnesses and relapses recently, is still active in the field, planting and caring for his plants with love and dedication. The visit to his conuco was an experience that filled me with inspiration and gratitude to see the hard work involved and that thanks to people who dedicate themselves to this work we can all eat.
El día se estaba nublado, con un cielo parcialmente grisáceo y un viento fresco y algo fuerte que parecía indicarnos que pronto podría estar lloviendo. A pesar de esto, esa misma nubosidad daba la sensación de que todo pareciera mucho más verde y lleno de vida. La tierra estaba marrón oscuro como si la tierra estubiese humedecida y bien abonada.
The day was cloudy, with a partly grayish sky and a fresh and somewhat strong wind that seemed to indicate that it could soon be raining. Al llegar al conuco, lo primero que llamó mi atención fue la variedad de plantas que Cansio había sembrado. Entre ellas estaban los chícharos, unos granos muy comunes en el oriente del país, que en su tiempo libre y con mucho cuidado, él cosecha, separa y seca y hasta reparte a varias personas en la familia. Los chícharos no solo son una fuente importante de proteínas, sino que también representan una tradición agrícola que se ha transmitido de generación en generación en su cultura oriental.
Upon arriving at the conuco, the first thing that caught my attention was the variety of plants that Cansio had planted. Among them were peas, a very common grain in the eastern part of the country, which in his free time and with great care, he harvests, separates and dries and even distributes to several people in the family. Peas are not only an important source of protein, but also represent an agricultural tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation in his eastern culture.
Otra planta que no podía faltar en su sembradío era la auyama, un ingrediente fundamental en la dieta de los orientales. La auyama, conocida también como calabaza en otros países, la preparan en diversas formas: en sopas, sancochos, cremas o tortas. Cada preparación nos deja ver la versatilidad de este alimento, que con su toque dulzón natural sirve también para hacer unas arepas dulcitas deliciosas. El tio Cancio cuida de cada sembradío con mucho esmero y se nota por el resultado final.
Another plant that could not be missing in their crops was the auyama, a fundamental ingredient in the diet of the Orientals. The auyama, also known as pumpkin in other countries, is prepared in various ways: in soups, stews, creams or cakes. Each preparation shows us the versatility of this food, which with its natural sweet touch can also be used to make delicious sweet arepas. Uncle Cancio takes care of each crop with great care and it shows in the final result.
Y no podía faltar el maíz, otro cultivo común en la región oriental. El maíz en su parcela estaba ya grande, ya estaba espigando y pronto habían frutos super esenciales para hacer el plato oriental más conocido y amado por ellos, La cachapa. Este plato, hecho con maíz fresco molido y generalmente acompañado con queso o mantequilla, este plato nos muestra la sencillez de la vida en el campo en la mesa.
And corn, another common crop in the eastern region, could not be missing. Algo sorprendente para mí fue ver como todo estaba perfectamente alineado y nuestro tío se había encargado él mismo de sembrar todo con sus manos. La vista era parecida a sembrar con máquina y tanta precisión me deja impresionada porque siento que no es una habilidad que yo tenga desarrollada.
Al final de la mañana tío ya nos había comentado algunas cosas sobre el trabajo que había hecho y el sacrificio de venir todos los días a cuidar de este cultivo. Tiene que caminar más de un kilómetro diario para llevar hasta allá y devolverse. De verdad que gracias a estos hombre fuertes emocionalmente, mentalmente y físicamente con una voluntad de acero nos inspiran y nos hacen ver que gracias a ellos hoy existen tiempos más "fáciles". Me voy a casa con admiración y una sensación de reflexión dentro de mí.
By the end of the morning uncle had already told us some things about the work he had done and the sacrifice of coming every day to take care of this crop. He has to walk more than a kilometer every day to get there and back. Truly, thanks to these emotionally, mentally and physically strong men with a will of steel they inspire us and make us see that thanks to them today there are “easier” times. I go home with admiration and a sense of reflection within me.
