The dusty cowboy or muddy explorer fit in with the American culture, so sitting on the ground seems like no big thing. I remember my grandfather hacking up phlegm and depositing it in his hanky and returning it to his shirt pocket. Sort of gross, but sort of normal in a weird sort of way.
