This week I approached the narrative of the mythical Edgar Allan Poe, an American writer considered a master of fantasy and horror. Famous for his poem The Raven, whose translation into Spanish by José Antonio Pérez Bonalde is extraordinary, he was also an excellent storyteller, although to fully understand his work the reader must place himself in the historical and circumstantial context of the late eighteenth century. In this anthology of short stories we are presented with nine narratives and in most of them we can notice a mysterious atmosphere, where different details that give life to the pages are nuanced, however, it can be challenging for the modern reader, who handles other concepts and is usually placed in a different context.
From this collection I favored two stories: The Golden Beetle and The Case of Mr. Valdemar, both examples of Poe's mastery of combining mystery, science and the macabre. In the first story a classic in terms of science fiction is exposed, trapping the soul inside an inert body and making it interact. On the other hand, the next story stars William Legrand, a man obsessed with a golden beetle, which he finds on one of his expeditions on Sullivan's Island. The most outstanding feature of this text is the meticulous plot; every detail is described in order to unveil the whereabouts of a hidden treasure.
Poe's narrative may seem dense nowadays, in a world dominated by technology and which gives priority to the immediate, but his mastery consists precisely in creating sensations from a macabre and supernatural universe. In its time, The Case of Mr. Valdemar caused a great stir, but today the perception is different due to various audiovisual proposals that have been more daring. But in the same way, the exploration of Poe takes us to the limits of science and its confrontation with morality in a dark era.
The Tales of Edgar Allan Poe are a sample of the literary genius of an author who knew how to mark a milestone, which focused on terror, mystery and whose proposal questioned his environment. Undoubtedly, his narrative is loaded with great historical value due to its transcendence in universal literature.

Célebre por su poema El Cuervo, cuya traducción al castellano realizada por José Antonio Pérez Bonalde es extraordinaria, también se erigió como un excelso narrador, aunque para comprender a plenitud su obra el lector debe ubicarse en un contexto histórico y circunstancial de finales del siglo XVIII. Al adentrarse en sus cuentos, el lector debe realizar un pacto de ficción y aceptar que todo lo presentado en la obra es posible, solamente así podrá situarse en los distintos escenarios, tal como si estuviese observando una película.
Poe sigue siendo considerado una referencia en la literatura gótica y aún cuando ha transcurrido más de un siglo desde sus publicaciones, todavía está vigente. En esta antología de Cuentos se nos presentan nueve narraciones y en la mayoría se puede notar una atmósfera misteriosa, donde se matizan diferentes detalles que le dan vida a las páginas, sin embargo, puede resultar desafiante para el lector moderno, quien maneja otros conceptos y por lo regular se sitúa en un contexto distinto.
De esta colección me incliné por dos relatos: El escarabajo de oro y El caso del señor Valdemar, ambos ejemplos de la maestría de Poe para combinar el misterio, la ciencia y lo macabro. En el primer relato se expone un clásico en lo que respecta a la ciencia ficción, atrapar el alma dentro un cuerpo inerte y hacerla interactuar. Por otra parte, la siguiente historia está protagonizada por William Legrand, un hombre obsesionado con un escarabajo dorado, el cual encuentra en una de sus expediciones en la isla Sullivan. Lo más resaltante de este texto es la trama meticulosa, se describe cada mínimo detalle para develar el paradero de un tesoro escondido.
La narrativa de Poe puede parecer densa en la actualidad, en un mundo dominado por la tecnología y que concede prioridad a lo inmediato, pero su maestría justamente consiste en crear sensaciones a partir de un universo macabro y sobrenatural. En su época, El caso del señor Valdemar causó gran revuelo, pero hoy la percepción es distinta debido a diversas propuestas audiovisuales que han sido más atrevidas. Pero de igual manera, la exploración a Poe nos traslada hacia los límites de la ciencia y su confrontación con la moral en una época oscura.
Los Cuentos de Edgar Allan Poe son una muestra del genio literario de un autor que supo marcar un hito, el cual se concentró en el terror, el misterio y cuya propuesta hizo cuestionamientos a su entorno.
