Snow White and Rose Pink (Eng/Esp)

When I wrote yesterday about Red Riding Hood, both Charles Perrault's and the Brothers Grimm's versions, I was intrigued about the literary production of both German artists because they created children's literature from other stories or from the oral tradition. In this sense, I was investigating and I found in my little Alma's books the story Snow White and Rose Red.

Although it is not as popular as other stories by the Brothers Grimm, the name Snow White takes us to a universal reference of children's literature. But on this occasion, the character appears next to her sister and her mother, all living in a hut near a forest. Although, as in Little Red Riding Hood, there is no father figure, in this case, it is mentioned that the girls' father died.

The story highlights the kindness, obedience and beauty of the two sisters, who become friends with a bear, here humanized, who asks them for shelter in his hut during the winter days. Once spring arrives, the bear returns to the forest to guard a treasure from the goblins, who are presented as evil beings.

Precisely, the antagonist of the story is a bitter and ungrateful goblin, which is evidenced when Snow White and Rose Red rescue him on several occasions, but both receive insults after their good deed. This dynamic sends a message to children that serves to reflect on the human condition and values.

The setting could not be other than an enchanted forest where magic breaks with all verisimilitude of realism, privileging children's imagination. In this place, wild animals are presented as civilized and even humanized, as is the case with the bear. There is even mention of the guardian angel of the good children, described as a girl in a bright white dress, very similar to the fairies that appear in other stories.

As is predictable in the tales of the Brothers Grimm, the happy ending comes as the pages advance, the villain gets his comeuppance for his evil deeds, the bear breaks his curse and both Snow White and Rose Red marry two princes. At this point, the text is enshrined with the society of the time, however, it is also up to us, as adults, to show a broader picture of injustice and evil beyond the fictional plane and the fantasy world presented to us.

Snow White and Rose Red is a story that allows that first approach to reading, it has simple words and, in this edition, the font size makes it legible. It is a good alternative to narrate to children because it has excellent illustrations, which are more similar to real references than to fantastic figures.

It is an easy to read story. Also the images are a plus. Is this a variable of the original Snow White?

No, they are presented as separate stories. In fact, the subject matter of this one is a bit more complex.

This one is an interesting version because it uses goblin rather than the typical witch that we normally see.

That's right, here the goblin represents the evil side of the story and also adds more fantasy to the plot.

Wow, I didn't know this story at all! With that title, at first I thought it was the same old one, the one about the seven dwarfs. How curious that the Grimms had another story with a "Snow White." It actually sounds really cute, with the bear who turns out to be a prince and the ungrateful elf... I love these fables with a moral! Thanks for introducing me to a little gem I didn't know about.

It is a very different story, the Snow White reference takes us to the classic story, but in this plot we have an evil goblin and an enchanted bear. It is always nice to learn more about this oral tradition, I will continue to explore children's literature.
