In the stories compiled in Shivering Breviary we can appreciate an interesting selection of authors who, despite not being considered masters of the genre, are recognized as writers of great quality.

In this wandering, an improbable event occurs that will trigger the climax of horror, all narrated with sobriety.
The following story also presents a fascinating story, "The Mediatint" by M.R. James moves the supernatural and inserts it into a story where the director of a museum is sent an ancient engraving that comes to life and also illustrates a bloody event. The narrator is impressive for his description of elements and the dosage in terms of revealing details. Here, horror is built from what is suggested and not from what is presented.
While in "The White Powder" by A. Machen the strategy is different because the narrator pushes the reader to a terrain where reality operates with a different mechanism, where occultism and magic pull the strings of the story. The protagonist is a chemical substance, a white powder, capable of transforming those who come into contact with it. The allegory to drugs is there, but the references are located centuries ago, so it is possible to reflect on humanity and its fascination with self-destruction. The power of the unknown and the impossibility of getting away from vices is also perceived and even presents a fragile border between the sensible and madness because the same chemical components are used in the preparation of medicines to save lives, but a modification in the formula leads to a path of horror.
As a whole, Shivering Breviary gives us a really interesting anthology for its authors and stories. The selected stories: "Calor de agosto", "La mediatinta" and "El polvo blanco" are examples that horror can be suggested instead of repeating bloody and macabre stories, or clinging to the eternal conflict between good and evil.
