Dear friends of the Hive Book Club, I have begun a few days off work and among my essential plans is to resume the small readings that are indispensable to me. In that endeavor to find short works I could start and finish in the same day, I found this book I've kept for many years: Seven Misogynistic Tales by the American author Patricia Highsmith.
If you are not familiar with this writer, I just urge you to hurry and enter the universe of her narrative. She wrote from a very young age and, from the beginning, did not hesitate to delve into morbid themes such as the human tendency to lie, guilt, and, of course, crime, which is why she is considered one of the greats of the noir genre. She has major novels but also short stories like this one I bring you.
A necessary book that brings us seven tales with titles so suggestive and transparent that you pounce on them without hesitation: The Ballerina, The Licensed Prostitute or the Wife, The Breeder, The Perfect Miss, The Prude, The Victim, and The Perfectionist. We witness a dance of good metaphors and very simple language, without euphemisms or half-measures, all used to describe to us the lives of various women.
It is a book that can be digested in very little time, all ideal to be read at the pace of modern life, where haste leaves us no time to enjoy pleasures like that of reading.
I confess that upon opening this book, I expected to find what the title announced, perhaps women caricatured through the lens of a consummate author. What I found, instead, was a set of distorting mirrors where each reflection forced me to question not only the characters, but also the expectations that I myself, as a reader and as a woman, could have.
This master of psychological suspense does not write conventional horror stories, but it is still terror, a subtle, insidious kind, portraying for us from her first story a woman who revolves around physical perfection and discipline, to another where she plays with social roles as if they were interchangeable costumes. Midway through the reading, I caught myself reflecting on those silent transactions we all make in the name of love or stability.
The author can show us in these stories as many faces of the same coin as we are incapable of imagining. Some that reside in appearance, others in the excessive control of their environment, self-imposed prisoners. Patricia dismantles piece by piece sentimentalized and even romantic stereotypes. Those labels we see daily, you can find them shattered in this book I hold in my hands right now.
But the question that remains at the end of the book is: Is Highsmith a misogynist? After closing the book, my conclusion is definitely that she is not. These tales are not an attack on women, but an attack on the cages that are built for us. This formidable author with great precision exposes how social misogyny can distort a person.
Reading this book was an uncomfortable, and perhaps even unpleasant, experience, but therein lies its true value. This volume did not offer me heroines with whom to identify; it forced me to look squarely at the small betrayals we commit against ourselves.
Highsmith, with her cold, penetrating prose, does not offer us comfort. Instead, she offers us a mirror, and sometimes that is the greatest gift one can receive.

Queridos amigos del Club de Lectura Hive, he comenzado unos días de descanso laboral y entre mis planes imprescindibles está retomar las pequeñas lecturas que para mí son esenciales. En ese afán de buscar obras breves que pudiera empezar y terminar el mismo día, encontré este libro que conservo desde hace muchos años: Siete Cuentos Misóginos de la autora estadounidense Patricia Highsmith.
Si no conocen a esta escritora, solo les pido que se apresuren a entrar en el universo de su narrativa. Ella escribió desde muy joven y, desde entonces, no dudaba en adentrarse en temáticas morbosas como la tendencia humana a mentir, la culpa y, por supuesto, los crímenes, por lo que es considerada una de las grandes del género negro. Tiene grandes novelas pero también relatos como este que les traigo.
Un libro necesario que nos trae siete relatos con títulos tan sugerentes y transparentes que te abalanzas sobre ellos sin dudarlo: La Bailarina, La Prostituta Autorizada o la Esposa, La Paridora, La Perfecta Señorita, La Mojigata, La Víctima y La Perfeccionista. Asistimos a un baile de buenas metáforas y un lenguaje muy sencillo, sin tapujos ni medias tintas, todo utilizado para describirnos la vida de diversas mujeres.
Se trata de un libro digerible en muy poco tiempo, ideal para ser leído al ritmo de la vida actual, en la que la prisa nos deja sin tiempo para disfrutar de placeres como el de la lectura.
Les confieso que al abrir este libro, esperaba encontrar lo que el título anunciaba, quizás mujeres caricaturizadas bajo la lente de una autora consumada. Lo que hallé, en cambio, fue un conjunto de espejos deformantes donde cada reflejo me obligaba a preguntarme no solo sobre los personajes, sino sobre las expectativas que yo misma, como lectora y como mujer, podía tener.
Esta maestra del suspense psicológico no escribe relatos de terror convencional, pero sigue siendo terror, sutil, insidioso, representándonos desde su primer relato a una mujer que gira en torno a la perfección física y la disciplina, hasta otro donde juega con los roles sociales como si fueran trajes intercambiables. En medio de la lectura me descubrí reflexionando sobre esas transacciones silenciosas que todas hacemos en nombre del amor o la estabilidad.
La autora puede mostrarnos en estos relatos tantas caras de una misma moneda como no somos capaces de imaginar. Unas que habitan en la apariencia, otras en el control excesivo de su entorno, prisioneras autoimpuestas. Patricia desmonta pieza a pieza estereotipos sentimentalizados e incluso románticos. Esas etiquetas que vemos a diario, puedes encontrarlas hechas trizas en este libro que sostengo en las manos en este instante.
Pero la pregunta que persiste al final del libro es: ¿Será Highsmith misógina? Tras cerrar el libro, mi conclusión es definitivamente que no. Estos cuentos no son un ataque a las mujeres, sino un ataque a las jaulas que son construidas para nosotras. Esta autora formidable, con gran precisión, expone cómo la misoginia social puede deformar a una persona.
Leer este libro fue una experiencia incómoda, y quizás incluso desagradable, pero ahí reside realmente su valor. Este volumen no me ofreció heroínas con las que identificarme; me obligó a mirar de frente las pequeñas traiciones que cometemos contra nosotras mismas.
Highsmith, con esa prosa suya fría y penetrante, no nos brinda consuelo. En cambio, nos ofrece un espejo, y a veces ese es el mejor regalo que nos pueden hacer.
