Friends of @Hivebookclub. To bring you a brief review about " Voices and Echoes, a novel by Aida Bhar, a Cuban writer, is a great pleasure. She is my favorite Cuban writer and a model to follow as writer and as a woman.
Voices and Echoes, is a work published in 2006 and reissued in 2014. Its plot travels through identity, writing, family relationships and the vocation of a young woman who seeks to grow and be authentic despite the times and social schemes.
The protagonist is a young woman determined to become a writer, who explores her lineage as a means to learn and self -discover. In her transit through the university the tensions of a chaotic environment are reflected, in which "the new man" of the revolution, is eroding everything, even art, sinking ethical and moral concepts under a rigid ideological lefty scheme .
Aida develops the narrative mainly in the context of the university, where the protagonist enrolls in the lyrics career.There manages to capture the essence of the academic environment, debates, critical reflections, dogmatisms and intolerant attitudes.
On that site, freedom of thought is blurred.While the protagonist faces an environment full of ideologies and prejudices that challenge her vision of the world and her perception of writing.The university acts as a scenario that acutely contrasts with the history of her family, the duality between the personal and the intellectual is quite interesting.
Many times I was reflected in the trip of the protagonist that is not only a literary learning process, but confronts the realities of a family full of secrets, expectations and aspirations not fulfilled and a lot of disagreements with the home, the government, the educational system.
Through multiple scenes, Aida offers us a vivid and emotional portrait of the characters that have influenced the life of the young woman, each of them with their own struggles, her voices and echoes.The mixture of these family echoes with the voices of their classmates makes us see a personal history told with exquisite way.
Reading voices and echoes is to approach the writer in dissimilar experiences that invite us to reflect on the search for truth in a world full of appearances. Auda Bhar plays with the codes from the same title of her novel;The voices are those that have something different to say and they choose to say it, no matter what, despite the silent walls of domination.The echoes, however, are those who prefer to repeat the hollow phrases that power imposes, or proposes, in exchange for a militant yoke.The play itself is questioned by the protagonist, it is constituted in the metaphor of the group, the university and their social time.
One of the virtues of this work is the recognition of the authentic against the false.The protagonist begins early to discern between the truths and lies that surround her.A discovery process that is essential for her development as a writer, for her personal growth, establishing an acute proximity between author and character.
Both the writer and the protagonist allow to challenge the established norms and forge their own voices.
Aida Bahar is, in my opinion, one of the most outstanding narrators of the Cuban 20th century.
In voices and echoes, she invites us to initiate an introspective trip that transcends the act of writing.She offers us a novel full of nuances, about a girl who turns her life into an act of resistance.
With this novel I have been lucky, because I have lent it to many friends and it always come back to my hands, although after reading it, nobody wants to return it to me.
If you get to it and allow yourself to reflect between its lines, you will find among many echoes, the power of a voice, or some voices that make up this dynamic, current, and so close story that it could be perfectly ours.

Amigos de @hivebookclub, traerles una breve reseña sobre Las Voces y los ecos, una novela de Aida Bhar, escritora cubana, es un gran placer. Ella es mi escritora cubana favorita y un modelo a seguir como escritora y como mujer.
Las Voces y Los ecos, es una obra publicada en el 2006 y reeditada en el año 2014. Su trama transita por la identidad, la escritura, las relaciones familiares y la vocación de una joven que busca crecer y ser auténtica a pesar de los tiempos y los esquemas sociales.
La protagonista es una joven decidida a convertirse en escritora, que explora su linaje como un medio para aprender y autodescubrirse. En su transito por la universidad se reflejan las tensiones de un entorno caótico, en el que "el hombre nuevo" de la Revolución, está erosionando todo, incluso el arte, hundiendo conceptos éticos y morales bajo un rígido esquema ideológico de izquierda.
Aida desarolla la narrativa principalmente en el contexto de la Universidad, donde la protagonista se matricula en la carrera de Letras. Alli logra capturar la esencia del ambiente académico, debates, reflexiones críticas, dogmatismos y actitudes intolerantes.
En aquel sitio se desdibuja la libertad de pensamiento. Mientras la protagonista se enfrenta a un ambiente lleno de ideologías y prejuicios que desafían su visión del mundo y su percepción sobre la escritura. La Universidad actúa como un escenario que contrasta de manera aguda con la historia de su familia, es interesante la dualidad entre lo personal y lo intelectual.
Muchas veces me vi reflejada en el viaje de la protagonista que no es solo un proceso de aprendizaje literario, sino que confronta las realidades de una familia llena de secretos, expectativas y aspiraciones no cumplidas y un montón de inconformidades con el hogar, el gobierno, el sistema educativo.
A través de múltiples escenas, Aida nos ofrece un retrato vívido y emocional de los personajes que han influido en la vida de la joven, cada uno de ellos con sus propias luchas, sus voces y ecos. La mezcla de esos ecos familiares con las voces de sus compañeros de clase nos hace ver una historia personal contada de manera exquisita.
Leer Las Voces y los Ecos es un acercarse a la escritora en disimiles experiencias que nos invitan a reflexionar sobre la búsqueda de la verdad en un mundo lleno de apariencias. De aquí , el nombre; Aida Bhar juega con los códigos desde el mismo título de su novela; Las Voces, son aquellos que tienen algo diferente, propio que decir y lo dicen a pesar de los muros silenciosos de la dominación. Los Ecos, sin embargo, son aquellos que prefieren repetir las frases huecas que el poder les impone, o les propone, a cambio de un yugo militante. La propia obra de teatro por la que es cuestionada la protagonista, se constituye en metáfora del grupo, de la universidad y de su tiempo.
Una de las virtudes de esta obra es el reconocimiento de lo auténtico frente a lo falso. La protagonista comienza tempranamente a discernir entre las verdades y mentiras que la rodean. Un proceso de descubrimiento que es fundamental para su desarrollo como escritora, para su crecimiento personal, estableciendo una aguda proximidad entre autor y personaje.
Tanto la escritora como la protagonista se permiten desafiar las normas establecidas y forjar su propia voz.
Aida Bahar es, en mi opinión, una de las narradoras más destacadas del siglo XX cubano.
En Las Voces y los ecos, nos invita a iniciar un viaje introspectivo que trasciende el acto de escribir. Ella nos ofrece una novela llena de matices, acerca de una muchacha que convierte su vida en un acto de resistencia.
Con esta novela he tenido suerte, pues la he prestado a muchos y siempre consigo recuperarla, a pesar que después de leerla, nadie me la quiere devolver.
Si llegas a ella y te permites reflexionar entre sus líneas, encontrarás entre muchos ecos, la potencia de una voz, o algunas voces que conforman esta historia dinámica, actual, y tan cercana que bien pudiera ser la nuestra.
