Despues de "Monín el fotógrafo" que es el primer libro que recuerdo haber leido por mi mismo, uno de los libros que marcaron mi pasión por la lectura es: "Las Aventuras de Tom Sawyer", escrita por Mark Twain, destaca como una obra clásica de la literatura estadounidense. Entrar en sus páginas es como entrar en mundo fantástico donde todo parece raro aunque perfectamente posible. Desde el mismo comienzo de la narración, Mark te atrapa con su modo de contar, manejando un lenguaje sencillo pero con precisión quirúrgica a la hora de mostrarnos cada una de las escenas por las que transita su personaje principal.
Con la visión de un cronista, Twain describe las travesuras de Tom, un adolescente soñador que vive y madura a orillas del Misisipi. En esta novela los niveles de realidad son tan cercanos que el autor lleva a sus personajes de un nivel a otro, arrastrandonos con ellos, sin que lo notemos siquiera. Lo cotidiano se vuelve extraordinario; un castigo se puede convertir en una victoria y un gato muerto, en un tesoro. Todos sus personajes son memorables y representan diversas facetas de la vida y la moralidad en la sociedad de un tiempo marcado por los prejuicios y los dogmas religiosos. Entre los personajes principales sobresalen ademas deTom Sawyer; Huckleberry Finn, Becky Thatcher, la tía Polly y el indio Joe; cada uno de ellos respondiendo a un diseño psicológico en virtud de enriquecer la trama.
Tom, es un niño travieso, inteligente, que intenta evadir sus responsabilidades domesticas y escolares mientras se involucra en divertidas situaciones que, para él son solo aventuras.A pesar de sus travesuras, Tom posee un fuerte sentido de la justicia y una inquebrantable lealtad hacia sus amigos, especialmente hacia el rebelde Huckleberry Finn.
Huck, es el mejor amigo de Tom y no tiene ataduras, vive, come y duerme donde puede o quiere; sin prestarle importancia alguna a la sociedad que lo discrimina, ni a la educación o las normas sociales.
Esta actitud lo convierte ante los ojos de Tom en un símbolo de independencia, pues ha escapado de un hogar abusivo y vive por su cuenta, eligiendo su propio camino, a veces con destellos de autenticidad y valentía, enfrentándose a dilemas éticos, sobre todo en relación con la esclavitud y la amistad. Su lealtad hacia Tom y su lucha interna entre el que dirán y su propia conciencia, lo muestran como un personaje profundamente complejo.
El afecto de Tom hacia Huck solo es opacado por la atracción que nuestro protagonista siente hacia la bella Becky, una niña que representa la inocencia y la postura burguesa de la sociedad. A medida que la historia avanza. Becky se va convirtiendo en el catalizador para las acciones de Tom, y su relación manifiesta los conflictos del primer amor, en los que no faltan los celos y los malentendidos.

El indio Joe y sus acciones despreciables, obligan a Tom y Huck a enfrentarlo, demostrando a pesar de todo el temor que el bandido les infunde, el coraje y la determinación de los adolescentes. Este personaje resulta imprescindible para Twain, quien lo utiliza para mostrar los rezagos de su tiempo.
"Las Aventuras de Tom Sawyer" es uno de mis libros favoritos y lectura obligada en todos los círculos de lectura que coordino, también en mis talleres literarios. Cada vez que puedo regreso a sus páginas, sus imágenes se reproducen en mi mente como un audiovisual.
