Of all the Christmas children's literature ever written, my favorite has always been, and always will be, A Christmas Carol by the English writer Charles Dickens. I have enjoyed this story in a book, in a comic book, in a movie with real actors and in cartoons, I especially liked the version with the Disney characters.

When I was younger I had the comic book, and when I had my children, I bought the book, but nowadays I don't know where either of the two works can be found. A few days ago, my son asked me for a Christmas story that I could recommend to read to the kids, and I reminded him of this wonderful work, so I looked it up on the web and downloaded it to send to him, and I read it again myself. I will never get tired of reading it and watching it on TV, its context is wonderful, full of values and great teachings.

What is A Christmas Carol about?

This story tells us the life of Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter and lonely old man who possessed a great fortune but was stingy and ill-feeling, unable to share his wealth with the needy, and even denied help to members of his family.

Old Scrooge had a clerk whom he exploited miserably, and even made him work until Christmas time. In the midst of his bitter ways, he also hated Christmas and used to spend that day alone in the huge house where he lived. That Christmas Eve night, four spirits appeared to the old man; first the ghost of his partner, and then the spirits of Christmas past, Christmas present, and Christmas future.

Each one brought for him a message of reflection through episodes of his life from childhood, youth, the time he became an adult, the reason he became bitter, his cruel way of treating everyone, how his employee lived in poverty and yet happiness reigned in his home, and how his days on earth would end if he did not change his attitude soon.

These swift visions were experienced by old Scrooge between midnight and dawn, when the last spirit returned him to his home and the old man realized that his attitude was meaningless and that he should be more noble of heart. From that moment on, he not only shared with everyone what he owned, but also helped his faithful employee to solve all the problems he had.

Throughout the trajectory of the old man's adventure with the three spirits, the importance of human values, nobility, kindness, solidarity, respect, empathy, kindness, friendship, love, among many others, are reaffirmed, as well as the reflection of what can happen if we let negative feelings such as hate, bitterness, selfishness, cruelty, and many others, enter our lives.

De toda la literatura infantil navideña que se ha escrito, mi favorita siempre ha sido y va a ser, Cuento de Navidad del escritor inglés Charles Dickens. Esta historia la he disfrutado en libro, en revista de cómics, en película con actores reales y en dibujos animados, especialmente me gustó la versión con los personajes de Disney.

Estando más jovencita tenía la revista en cómic, y cuando tuve a mis hijos, compré el libro, pero en la actualidad no sé dónde se encuentran ninguna de las dos obras. Días atrás, mi hijo me preguntó por un cuento navideño que le pudiera recomendar para leerle a los niños, y le recordé esta maravillosa obra, por lo que la busqué en la web y la descargué para enviársela, y yo misma la volví a leer. Nunca me cansaré de leerla y verla en tv, su contexto es maravilloso, lleno de valores y grandes enseñanzas.

¿De qué trata Cuento de Navidad?

Esta historia nos relata la vida de Ebenezer Scrooge, un anciano amargado y solitario que poseía una gran fortuna pero era tacaño y de malos sentimientos, incapaz de compartir su riqueza con los más necesitados, e incluso, negarle ayuda hasta a los miembros de su familia.

El viejo Scrooge tenía un empleado a quien explotaba miserablemente, e incluso, lo hacía trabajar hasta los días de navidad. En medio de su amargo proceder, también odiaba la navidad y acostumbraba pasar ese día solo en la inmensa casa donde vivía. Esa noche de víspera de navidad, al anciano se le aparecieron cuatro espíritus; primero el fantasma de su socio, y luego los espíritus de las navidades pasadas, el de las navidades presentes, y el de las navidades futuras.

Cada uno traía para él un mensaje de reflexión a través de episodios de su vida desde la infancia, la juventud, el momento en que se hizo adulto, la razón por la que se convirtió en un amargado, su manera tan cruel de tratar a todos, cómo vivía su empleado en la pobreza y aun así reinaba la felicidad en su hogar, y cómo terminarían sus días en la Tierra si no cambiaba pronto su actitud.

Estas visiones tan veloces las vivió el viejo Scrooge entre las 12 de la medianoche y el amanecer, cuando ya el último espíritu lo regresó a su hogar y el anciano comprendió que su actitud no tenía sentido y que debía ser más noble de corazón. Desde ese momento no sólo compartió con todos lo que poseía, sino que ayudó a su empleado fiel a resolver todos los problemas que tenía.

A través de toda la trayectoria en la aventura del anciano con los tres espíritus, se van reafirmando la importancia de los valores humanos, la nobleza, la bondad, la solidaridad, el respeto, la empatía, la amabilidad, la amistad, el amor, entre muchos más, y el reflejo de lo que puede suceder si dejamos entrar a nuestra vida sentimientos negativos como el odio, la amargura, el egoísmo, la crueldad, y muchos otros.
