My entry for the show me a shadow smash contest round (378)

Sometimes, it’s in the quiet moments that we catch the most powerful scenes. I’ve recently started paying more attention to shadows, not just as something that forms behind an object, but as something that tells a story of its own. I took four images recently that captured this idea for me.

The first was a glass and steel window. It was night, and the only light came from inside. The way the shadows danced across the window frame, bouncing off the steel lines, gave the photo a cold yet calming feel. Even in the dark, the window had a voice, it spoke of strength and stillness.

The second image is of a standing fan inside my room. The light from behind created a distinct shadow on the wall, making the fan look even taller and more commanding than it already is. It’s funny how something so simple and common can turn into a piece of art when light hits it right.

The third picture is a bench inside the house. The bench’s shadow fell across the floor like a memory frozen in time. It felt almost like the shadow was waiting for someone to come sit.

And then there’s the cupboard. I opened it under fluorescent light, and the way the light hit the wall, casting a clear shadow of the open door, caught my attention. It made the cupboard look alive, like it was stretching out quietly into the room.

Each of these images reminds me how shadows give everyday things a second life. They make us pause, notice, and feel. That’s what photography should be about, capturing the things we often miss.

Thanks for your time.
