ShadowHunters SMASh Contest – A Refuge from the Cuban Sun
These days the sun in Cuba feels extremely strong, and August—the hottest month of the year—has not even arrived yet.
At the beach the heat feels even more intense, but despite everything, going to the sea is still one of the few simple pleasures we can truly enjoy in this country. At least the beach itself is free, because transportation, food, or having something cold to drink is already another story.
Still, people keep going.
There is something special about the sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the feeling of escaping routine for a few hours. And on days like these, finding a good shadow becomes almost as valuable as the beach itself.
That is exactly what caught my attention in this scene.
The palm umbrella projected a beautiful shadow over the sand, creating a small refuge from the strong sunlight. The contrast between the bright beach and the dark shape on the sand made the image feel calm and inviting at the same time.
Sometimes a shadow is not only a visual detail. Sometimes it becomes relief, rest, and protection.
While everyone searches for a place to cool down under the intense Caribbean sun, these simple spaces gain a special meaning.
And this is the shadow I want to share with you today for this contest.

Por estos días el sol en Cuba se siente extremadamente fuerte, y eso que todavía no ha llegado agosto, que suele ser el mes más caluroso del año.
En la playa el calor se siente aún más intenso, pero a pesar de todo, ir al mar sigue siendo una de las pocas cosas simples que realmente podemos disfrutar en este país. Al menos la playa en sí es gratis, porque el transporte, la comida o tomarse algo frío ya es otra historia.
Aun así, la gente sigue yendo.
Hay algo especial en la brisa del mar, el sonido de las olas y la sensación de escapar de la rutina aunque sea por unas horas. Y en días como estos, encontrar una buena sombra se vuelve casi tan valioso como la playa misma.
Eso fue exactamente lo que llamó mi atención en esta escena.
La sombrilla de guano proyectaba una hermosa sombra sobre la arena, creando un pequeño refugio frente al fuerte sol. El contraste entre la claridad de la playa y la forma oscura sobre la arena hacía que la imagen transmitiera calma y descanso al mismo tiempo.
A veces una sombra no es solo un detalle visual. A veces también se convierte en alivio, descanso y protección.
Mientras todos buscan un lugar donde refrescarse bajo el intenso sol del Caribe, estos espacios sencillos adquieren un significado especial.
Y esta es la sombra que quiero compartir hoy con ustedes para este concurso.
