Struggling on hive? This must be what you are missing...

I was once reluctant to join Hive when I was told about it. I was also hesitant to write because I was earning so little, and seeing others earning massively made me even more reluctant. In fact, I once called Hive a waste of time and energy because, after spending so much time thinking and trying to create a post of 500 words, I would still get earnings like 0.2, 0.3Hbd etc.

So I stopped writing. One day, my unboarder called me to ask why I hadn’t been writing. I started complaining, but funnily enough, she was laughing at the way I was nagging about my earnings. It looked like she had expected all the complaints from me.

All she did was give me a word of advice and followed me through the process. To tell you the truth, she kept testifying about Hive. The beginning isn’t easy, but my growth in hive depends on my consistency and engagement, they were the solutions to my complaints.

They call her the queen of engagement, but I wonder how she does it because reading people’s posts was difficult for me. Most people use big grammar or incorrect English in their posts, which makes it difficult and tiresome.

My unboarder was persistent in encouraging me to keep writing daily and engaging with other people’s posts. She said it was going to help me gain visibility and more votes.

Did I take her advice? Yes, I did! And that is why I am still here. In fact, I have already withdrawn ₦144,000 since I started in 2023. I wrote consistently on Hive from April to October 2023 and was able to withdraw that amount without emptying my account.

Engagement helps you know people from far and wide people who, from being friends, can turn into family someday. It will also draw people towards you. I mean quality comments, not just any comments. Your comments on other people’s posts could make them vote for you and even get their friends to vote for you. They might want to check your work on Hive by viewing your posts and maybe giving you a follow.

Most communities will tell you that although they encourage engagement, it doesn’t guarantee upvotes. What does that tell you? Earning above $1 is often by luck, but keep doing the right thing on Hive, and you will be just fine. Hive rewards consistency and engagement, both in daily posts and comments. I can testify to that, and I am sure other old Hivers can too.

My journey so far on Hive has been more like an on-and-off situation because I became a mother in 2024, but I am still trying my best to write. I might not be consistent, but I will put in the work. Last year, I wrote my Hive goals, but due to the whole motherhood experience, I haven’t met those goals the way I had planned. Still, I’m not giving up on them I will rewrite those goals and work toward them when I finally find a good balance.

Finally, for newbies planning on taking a U-turn back to Web2 be patient on Hive. Be consistent, and build relationships by engaging with other hivers.

Earning above $1 is often by luck,

It is never luck. It is always the result of work, in some cases, nepotism, in other cases, genuine appreciation for the content that you've produced.

If we were to look at the overwhelming number of posts, I would be interesting in seeing the average and median reward on hive posts, by word count.

Maybe that's a project I can look into getting the data for.

I agree that hard work, consistency, and sometimes connections or timing pays off. The blockchain does reward quality, but visibility mostly depends on engagement.

Looking into the average and median rewards by word count is a solid idea. That kind of data would actually help indicate certain type of content that tends to do well. If you ever go ahead with it, I’d really like to see what you find.

I'm being lazy today, on my laptop in bed. I have some data from earlier this year on my main computer. It shouldn't be too difficult to do a quick analysis.

I will do it at some point today and then publish it in a few days. I have a queue of posts already waiting to go, I always have too much to say :D !

Haha, sounds like a productive kind of lazy to me! 😄 No rush at all, I am looking forward to seeing the analysis whenever it’s ready. It’s impressive that you already have a queue of posts lined up unlike me, oh gosh! I envy your zeal and determination as a writer. Clearly, you’re never short on insight!

I just don't have a day job anymore, so hive keeps me off the streets while my wife works to make the big bucks - and I do the cooking, cleaning, and other household administration. I'm a lucky man

That sounds like a good balance. Hive keeps you engaged, and managing the home is real work on its own.

I do get exhausted doing house chores, running my business, taking care of my one year old and hiving. To be sincere it's to much to handle but I don't know how I pull it off even though I am yet to find my balance.

It’s great that you both support each other in different ways.

It really is incredibly how much time it all takes up. I recently saw a YouTube video where a guy started doing a whole bunch of "this thing is recommended by x person" and kept adding more and more each day, for a full thirty days to see how it improved their life.

It was really interesting, as I've always thought about that concept.

eg:

"You're meant to walk 10,000 steps a day"
"After every meal, brush your teeth"
"Do meditation"
"Go to the gym"
"Journal"
"Do a skincare routine"
"Take an ice bath"

and so many other tasks. We have to accept that by devoting our time to one thing, we are actively appreciating that we are neglecting another thing. It is not possible to do it all. Time is the only resource that we can't make more of.

You're damn right. It is a clear example of how overwhelming it gets when you try to follow every recommended habit.

There are only 24 hours in a day, and trying to fit everything in leaves you overwhelmed before your day kick start. Choosing one thing often means dropping another, and that's just the reality. Time is limited, and it is important to be more intentional with how we spend it, and that is why I made hive optional but the rest are a must do.
