This year’s National Reading Month Culminating Activity was one of the most lively and memorable events at our school. For a whole month, teachers, students, and parents worked together to share the joy of reading and show how books spark imagination and lifelong learning. Among all the activities, the Book Character Costume Showcase stood out as the highlight of the celebration.

On the day of the main event, students came to school dressed as their favorite book characters. Instead of the usual uniforms, the school was filled with colorful costumes inspired by well-loved stories. Heroes, princesses, mythical creatures, and classic characters filled the grounds. This lively scene showed how reading brings stories to life and lets children explore new worlds, even while in their classroom.

The program began with a message about the importance of reading for building a hopeful future. It reminded everyone that reading helps students dream big and discover new possibilities, while also building skills for success. After the message, some students performed a short storytelling segment, showing how reading helps them become more creative and confident.

When the Book Character Costume part of the program began, excitement filled the room. Students from every grade walked onto the stage with confidence, showing off their chosen characters. Some dressed as fairy-tale figures, such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Peter Pan. Others chose characters from classic and modern stories, such as Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Many students also dressed as Filipino literary characters, showing their love for local stories and authors. Parents and guardians helped make the costumes using recycled materials, homemade designs, and creative accessories. This brought families closer together and encouraged students to be creative and resourceful, just like reading does.

During the presentation, judges watched each participant and looked for creativity, how well the costume matched the character, and confidence. Students didn’t just wear costumes—they acted like their characters by saying lines, striking signature poses, or showing traits from the stories. The audience cheered, especially for the youngest students who showed a lot of confidence. Teachers saw how activities like this help children feel better about themselves, talk more easily, and enjoy books. The Book Character Costume Showcase became more than a parade. It celebrated imagination, self-expression, and the ways stories shape who children are.

Beyond the costumes, the celebration included storytelling corners, reading booths, and book donation drives. Teachers led reading sessions in which students listened to inspiring stories, and older students volunteered to read aloud to younger students. These activities showed how reading brings students together and builds a strong sense of community at school. Best in Costume were recognized, but every participant was celebrated for their effort and enthusiasm. The school emphasized that the true reward was the joy of reading and the confidence gained by participating. The laughter, cheers, and smiles seen throughout the program showed that reading can bring hope, happiness, and unity.

As the program ended, everyone at school thought about what the celebration really meant. The theme, “Reading is a Bridge to a Future Full of Hope,” reminded us that reading is more than just something we do at school—it helps us grow all our lives. Reading makes us curious, teaches us good values, helps us use language better, and gives us many chances in life. Every book we read brings us closer to a better future. In the end, this year’s National Reading Month celebration was unforgettable because it made students love reading even more. The Book Character Costume Showcase demonstrated how stories help students become more creative and confident, and the activities throughout the month strengthened the school’s love of reading. Books really are bridges, and through reading, our students are being led to a hopeful future.
