In today's world, we often hear the word "self-love," but many people misunderstand the word or meaning. Some people thought being selfish or focusing only on ourselves was selfish, but self-love is actually about taking care of ourselves and others. So let's dive into the real topic.

What is self-love?

Self-love means taking the time to take care of ourselves, both mentally and physically. It's about accepting who we are, treating ourselves kindly, and recognising that we deserve happiness and respect. It doesn't mean being arrogant or ignorant of the needs of others; instead, it's about understanding that we are worthy of love and care, just like anyone else. When we practice self-love, we're giving ourselves permission to be happy, to make mistakes, and to grow.

Why do some people think self-love is selfish?

Some people thought taking care of ourselves was selfish, like I mentioned earlier, because we have been taught to always put others before ourselves. For example, if we're always helping others or putting their needs before our own, we might feel that focusing on ourselves is wrong. But there's one thing: taking care of ourselves doesn't mean we're ignoring or neglecting others. In fact, the better we take good care of ourselves, the better we'll be able to care for others and support them.

Why self-love is important

(1) When we practice self-love, we recharge our energy, making us more capable of being there for others when they need us.

(2) Self-love teaches us to know our limits. For example, sometimes we need to say "no" to things that will drain or harm us, even if it's hard. We saying "no" doesn't mean we don't care about others; we do, but when we know that we're not capable of doing the thing, we have to say "no" in order to afford being hurt.

(3) When we practice self-love, we begin to believe and trust in ourselves. We start to understand our worth and recognise our strengths. It also means we accept our flaws without letting them define us.

(4) Self-love means embracing who we really are without pretending to be someone we're not. The more we love and appreciate ourselves, the less we feel the need to seek approval from others.

How we can practice self-love

(1) We should always be kind to ourselves. Instead of us being paranoid, we should try being kind. If we make a mistake, let us remind ourselves that everyone makes mistakes.

(2) We should always let go of negative thoughts about ourselves. We all have moments where we all doubt ourselves. But when we see that negative thoughts are already coming into our heads, let us try to replace them with positive ones.

In conclusion, self-love isn't selfish; it's essential. When we take care of ourselves, we're not only improving our own lives, but we're also able to help and support others better. If we practice self-love, we become more confident, peaceful, etc. So, don't let us be afraid to love ourselves. After all, we'll deserve it.
