PORTADA.jpg

Hello my dear friends, today I am pleased to share with you a walk that we made through the historic center of Old Havana, whenever we have the opportunity we go for a walk through this area because there are many places to know and admire its colonial architectural beauty, this whole area is like a large open-air museum.

The main objective was to go to the Chocolate Museum, those who know me know that I am a super lover of this delicious delicacy and I always have an excuse to taste it in any of its variants.
We were walking along Mercaderes street because it is a very interesting street, it is for pedestrian traffic and it is beautifully cobbled, its current splendor is thanks to the restoration work carried out by the office of the City Historian under the direction of the always remembered and beloved Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler.

Its name (Merchants in English) is due to the fact that in colonial times this street had many shops where all kinds of products that came from overseas were sold, since this is the closest area to the entrance of the ships to the bay.
Right at the intersection of Mercaderes and Amargura streets is the Chocolate Museum, but before entering I took photos of this corner to tell you something very interesting.

This house is also called the house of the Green Cross, due to that beautiful cross or double unequal cross of wood, green in color that is supported on a stone pedestal.

In the past, in the seventeenth century and until the middle of the nineteenth century, Catholics celebrated Holy Week with a Stations of the Cross that took place along Amargura Street from the Convent of San Francisco de Asís to the Church of Holy Christ of the Good Journey.

At the corners of the entire route there were crosses where the procession stopped, prayed and left offerings. One of these crosses is the one that we can still see at this intersection thanks to the restoration of the entire building in 2003.

This building was always intended for shops of different types and on the upper floor is residences. From 2003 the lower floor was dedicated to the Casa del Chocolate Museum.

We finally went in to enjoy artisanal chocolate. The place is very busy; it is always like this because many people like chocolate. From the entrance we are invaded by the delicious aroma, it is a small place, with shelves that show different utensils for its preparation, molds to make the different presentations of chocolate and collections of cups for serving and drinking chocolate. There are also posters about the start of its production and its nutritional properties.

Separated by a glass we can see how a worker makes the chocolate that we will consume, at this time he was preparing the so-called tobaccos.

I ordered a cup of hot chocolate and my husband ordered a cold smoothie, we both accompanied them with buttered toast, we also ordered chocolate tobaccos of course. Everything was delicious!
