Dear friends of this beautiful Daily Blog community, first of all I wish you a happy Christmas holidays and lots of happiness, health, love and prosperity in the coming year 2025.
Today I want to share with you the visit we made to the church of El Carmelo. My mother asked me to accompany her to Mass this Christmas because she can no longer go out alone, we decided to go to the Catholic church that is just one block from our house.
My mother was like children when they go for a walk, she got up early, had her breakfast and started getting ready, the mass was at 10 am and an hour before she was ready to leave haha. We leave the house half an hour early to walk slowly, being careful not to trip.
It is a small modern parish from the late nineteenth century dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, also called Virgen del Carmen or Nuestra Señora del Carmen. He belongs to the order of the Discalced Carmelites.
I tell you these details because I am very curious and I like to investigate the origin of things and at the same time I like to share what I learn. And that's why I bring you a curiosity that I met just now, maybe some of you already knew it.
The order of the Discalced Carmelites arrived in Cuba in the eighteenth century and spread throughout the country through their temples and their social work, they are characterized by their austerity and their brown clothing. For this reason Cubans began to call the color brown as Carmelite and it is so ingrained that no other denomination is conceived for that color, when they tell us that something is brown we are left thinking... What color is that? haha
The El Carmelo Church is located on Línea Street and 16 in the homonymous neighborhood of Havana, it is very simple, it consists of a solid construction with a single very high door with a prominent arch and has the bell tower in the upper center of its building.
In the garden area there is a sculpture of Jesus Christ and on its left side is in a glass urn the Virgin of La Caridad del Cobre, patron saint of Cuba.
When we entered we were impressed by two large mural paintings on both sides of the parish with biblical passages. Also at the ends of the altar are 2 other wall paintings that reflect other passages. The four murals are really beautiful and were made by the Spanish painter Antonio Martínez Andrés in 1954, you can still appreciate their beauty because it retains its original color.
The most striking thing is the altar of the Virgen del Carmen, with the typical scapular of the order of the Discalced Carmelites, arranged on a pedestal with a navy blue background. The entire altar is beautifully carved and also the virgin is accompanied by four saints.
The mass was very beautiful, a girl played the piano and sang with a very angelic voice the songs of Christmas. My mom left very happy to have shared this moment in church, she gave her a lot of peace and I promised her that I would take her whenever I wanted to.
It is my wish that you have enjoyed getting to know this small but welcoming parish of El Carmelo. For me, the most important thing was to please my mother and that she was satisfied.

Acompañando a mi mamá a misa en la Iglesia de El Carmelo (ENG/ESP)
Queridos amigos de esta linda comunidad de Daily Blog, ante todo les deseo unas felices fiestas navideñas y mucha felicidad, salud, amor y prosperidad en el próximo año 2025.
Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes la visita que hicimos a la iglesia de El Carmelo. Mi madre me pidió que la acompañara a la misa en estas navidades pues ya ella no puede salir sola, decidimos ir a la iglesia católica que está a solo una cuadra de nuestra casa.
Mi madre estaba como los niños cuando van a pasear, se levantó temprano, tomó su desayuno y comenzó a alistarse, la misa era a las 10 am y una hora antes ya estaba lista para salir jaja. Salimos de casa media hora antes para caminar despacio, con cuidado de no tropezar.
Es una pequeña parroquia moderna de finales del siglo XIX dedicada a la Virgen María del Monte Carmelo, también llamada Virgen del Carmen o Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Pertenece a la orden de los Carmelitas Descalzos.
Les cuento estos detalles porque yo soy muy curiosa y me gusta investigar el origen de las cosas y a la vez me gusta compartir lo que aprendo. Y por eso les traigo una curiosidad que conocí justo ahora, quizás alguno de ustedes ya lo sabían.
La orden de Los Carmelitas Descalzos llegó a Cuba en el siglo XVIII y se esparcieron por todo el país a través de sus templos y su labor social, se caracterizan por su austeridad y por su vestimenta de color marrón. Por esta razón los cubanos comenzaron a llamar el color marrón como carmelita y está tan arraigado que no se concibe otra denominación para ese color, cuando nos dicen que algo es de color marrón nos quedamos pensando… qué color es ese? jaja
La Iglesia El Carmelo se encuentra en calle Línea y 16 en el barrio homónimo de La Habana, es muy sencilla, consta de una construcción sólida con una sola puerta muy alta con un arco prominente y tiene el campanario en el centro superior de su edificio.
En el área del jardín se encuentra una escultura de Jesucristo y a su lado izquierdo está en una urna de cristal la Virgen de La Caridad del Cobre, patrona de Cuba.
Cuando entramos nos impresionaron dos grandes pinturas murales a ambos lados de la parroquia con pasajes bíblicos. También en los extremos del altar hay otros 2 cuadros murales que reflejan otros pasajes. Realmente los cuatro murales son bellísimos y fueron realizados por el pintor español Antonio Martínez Andrés en 1954, aún se puede apreciar su belleza porque conserva su colorido original.
Lo más llamativo es el altar de la Virgen del Carmen, con el escapulario típico de la orden de los Carmelitas Descalzos, dispuesta sobre un pedestal con el fondo color azul marino. Todo el altar esta bellamente tallado y también la virgen está acompañada por cuatro santos.
La misa estuvo muy bonita, una muchacha tocaba al piano y cantaba con una voz muy angelical las canciones propias de la Navidad. Mi mamá salió muy feliz de haber compartido este momento en la iglesia, le dio mucha paz y le prometí que la llevaría cada vez que lo quisiera.
Es mi deseo que les haya gustado conocer esta pequeña pero confortable parroquia de El Carmelo. Para mí lo más importante fue complacer a mi mama y que ella quedara satisfecha.
