For about a month now, I've been accompanying my husband to the Gastroenterology Institute, where he's been receiving care for some ailments such as pain in the pit of his stomach and loss of appetite. Today we had a doctor's appointment, and the day dawned especially beautiful: the sky looked like it was covered in cotton wool. If my great-grandfather were alive, he would have said it was paved, as he used to call it when the sky was dressed like that. I've always been fascinated by that kind of sunrise; it reminds me of my childhood, and I imagine it as an endless road. I stood for a while contemplating it as we walked to the appointment.

Desde hace aproximadamente un mes he estado acompañando a mi esposo en el Instituto de Gastroenterología, donde ha recibido atención por algunas molestias como dolor en la boca del estómago y falta de apetito. Hoy tuvimos consulta médica, y el día amaneció especialmente hermoso: el cielo parecía cubierto de motas de algodón. Si mi bisabuelo estuviera vivo, habría dicho que estaba empedrado, como solía llamarlo cuando el cielo se vestía así. A mí siempre me ha fascinado ese tipo de amanecer, me recuerda a mi infancia y lo imagino como un camino infinito. Me quedé un rato contemplándolo mientras caminábamos hacia la consulta.
The institute is located in a fairly central area, next to Calixto García Hospital, surrounded by lush, well-maintained vegetation. Although my husband was a little nervous, he enjoyed the journey, which was actually very pleasant.
El instituto está ubicado en una zona bastante céntrica, junto al Hospital Calixto García, rodeado de vegetación abundante y bien cuidada. Aunque mi esposo iba algo nervioso, disfrutó el trayecto, que en realidad es muy agradable.
After seeing the doctor, we headed to the laboratory and outpatient department to learn the results of the tests. To do so, we had to go around the hospital and take 23rd Street, which allowed us to stretch our legs and calm our nerves. He was very apprehensive, but the walk helped.
The sun was already high, but luckily the path was mostly shaded. We passed by the side of the new hotel on K and 23rd Streets, known as the K Tower, whose official name is Iberostar Selection Havana. It's a tall, sober building that really looks like a tower. Several flags fly at its entrance, and I'm glad that its construction opened up access to K Street, where there used to be a large natural gap.
Después de ver al doctor, nos dirigimos a la sección de laboratorios y consulta externa para conocer los resultados de los análisis realizados. Para ello tuvimos que rodear el hospital y tomar por la calle 23, lo que nos permitió estirar las piernas y canalizar los nervios. Él estaba muy aprensivo, pero el paseo ayudó.
El sol ya estaba alto, pero por suerte el camino fue mayormente sombreado. Pasamos por el costado del nuevo hotel en la calle K y 23, conocido como la Torre K, cuyo nombre oficial es Iberostar Selection La Habana. Es un edificio alto y sobrio, que realmente parece una torre. En su entrada ondean varias banderas, y me alegra que en su construcción se haya habilitado el paso por la calle K, donde antes había un gran hueco natural.
This is one of Havana's most modern and tourist-friendly areas, home to several hotels. Nearby are La Colina and the iconic Habana Libre. Directly opposite is Coppelia, the ice cream cathedral, although vegetation almost completely covers it.
Esta es una de las zonas más modernas de La Habana y más visitada por turistas, donde convergen varios hoteles. Muy cerca están el Colina y el emblemático Habana Libre. Justo enfrente se encuentra el Coppelia, la catedral del helado, aunque la vegetación lo cubre casi por completo.
Upon reaching the corner of 25th and K, I came across the Vedado Methodist Church and Student Center. Its main facade, with three vertical sections, is decorated with floral reliefs and geometric shapes evoking the Art Deco style. It's an elegant building, part of the city's architectural heritage, a gem found amidst so much modernism.
On that same block is the clinic. We went in, and the doctor confirmed that my husband suffers from gastritis. He'll need to watch his diet and change some habits, but luckily, it's something he can improve with responsible treatment. We returned home confident that he'll feel better soon. He has his follow-up appointment in a month.
Al llegar a la esquina de 25 y K, me encontré con la Iglesia Metodista y Centro Estudiantil del Vedado. Su fachada principal, de tres cuerpos verticales, está decorada con relieves florales y formas geométricas que evocan el estilo Art Decó. Es una construcción elegante, que forma parte del legado arquitectónico de la ciudad, es una joya encontrada dentro de tanto modernismo.
En esa misma cuadra está la clínica. Entramos, y el médico confirmó que mi esposo padece de gastritis. Deberá cuidar su alimentación y modificar algunos hábitos, pero por suerte es algo que puede mejorar con responsabilidad. Volvimos a casa con la certeza de que pronto se sentirá mejor. En un mes tiene su consulta de seguimiento.
