But I can at least try to point him toward the idea that history is a chain of causes and reactions, not a morality play with heroes and villains.

This was pretty much my realization after growing older and understanding how history progresses. Sometimes there's randomness too, but it's mostly cause and effects that ripple across different players.

Sure, there is always randomness. But even that randomness doesn't hit in isolation, but builds on what came before. Every event has a spiderweb of events leading to it.
