I've been an off-and-off tabletop gamer for 40 years since I first played a red box D&D game when I was 12. I'm old enough that I lived through the "satanic panic" of the 1980s and had to hide my D&D books from my Baptist parents! Absolutely ancient.
I run various RPG games occasionally for some friends on Discord, and last night as I lay in bed contemplating the utility of Hive and its communities - I considered "What would a play-by-post (PBP) RPG game look like on Hive?"
Hive has a group of people who are strong at periodic engagement, writing, conscientiousness, and cooperation - some of the attributes needed to have a successful decentralized and perhaps asynchronous game.
Reading through forums about running PBP games, a frequent piece of reoccurring advice was "Don't!" It appeared many games frequently just sort of tapered off.
Some other advice I saw was to use mechanics in the style of a Westmarches campaign where players can explore a randomly generated map independently from each other.
Some streamlined mechanics seem like it would expedite gameplay, and those that employ more narrative-friendly mechanics.
I thought there might also be some interesting ways to tokenize the game, using existing community tokens, but I haven't fully developed the idea.
What are your thoughts?
What PBP game would you play on Hive?
What mechanics or rulesets would be more likely to work here?
What other factors could make a PBP game succeed on Hive?
