When we learn to draw, it’s common to do many practices, explore styles, explore shapes and techniques. Many times we accumulate more studies than finished works, but finishing works is also very important to see our progress and to understand how we evolve. I like to take my studies and turn them into finished pieces, like this drawing study with blotches that I ended up turning into an illustration. Today I’m showing you this process.
Cuando aprendemos a dibujar lo común es realizar muchas prácticas, explorar estilos, explorar formas y técnicas. Muchas veces acumulamos más estudios que obras terminadas, pero terminar obras es también muy importante para ver nuestro progreso y entender cómo evolucionamos. Me gusta tomar mis estudios y convertirlos en obras finalizadas, como este estudio de dibujo con manchas que terminé convirtiéndolo en una ilustración. Hoy les muestro este proceso.
I’ll be drawing an old teapot, and before starting to add blotches I like to see the general shape of the object and its volumes through a small sketch that serves as a guide. I really enjoy drawing old objects; I think they have a certain charm and a touch of magic.
Estaré dibujando una antigua tetera y antes de comenzar a dar manchas me gusta ver la forma general del objeto y sus volúmenes a través de un pequeño boceto que me funcione de guía. Me gusta mucho dibujar objetos antiguos, creo que tienen su cierto encanto y su poco de magia.
I made an initial placement of my blotches using three tones—in this case, gray—because I want to emulate metal. Even though I know there are reflections, reducing my palette to three tones helps me focus better on the shape, the lights, and the highlights. I achieve the intermediate tones by giving brushstrokes with the smudge tool.
Hice un primer posicionamiento de mis manchas usando tres tonos, en este caso de gris, porque quiero emular el metal. Aunque sé que hay reflejos, reducir a tres tonos mi paleta me ayuda a concentrarme mejor en la forma, las luces y los brillos. Los tonos intermedios los logro dando pinceladas con la herramienta dedo.
Little by little my drawing is taking shape. I add darker tones for the occlusion areas where there is less light, as well as a mix of white and gray for the areas of greater intensity in the light reflections.
Poco a poco va tomando forma mi dibujo, agrego tonos más oscuros para las zonas de oclusión donde hay menos luz, así como una mezcla de blanco y gris para las zonas de mayor intensidad de los reflejos de la luz.
This is quite a new process for me—not only drawing, since I haven’t been doing it consistently for even a year, but also this digital drawing technique. That’s why sometimes I make mistakes and go back over my steps again and again.
Esto es un proceso bastante nuevo para mí, no solo dibujar, que no llevo ni un año haciéndolo de forma constante, sino también esta técnica de dibujo digital, por lo que a veces cometo errores y regreso sobre mis pasos una y otra vez.
This is how the final result turned out. It’s not entirely realistic, but I think it more than redeems today’s practice—especially since it was my first time drawing metals.
Así quedó el resultado final, no es del todo realista pero creo que salva con creces la práctica de hoy y sobre todo mi primera vez dibujando metales.
I added the reflections of the surrounding lights, because the smooth surface of the metal usually reflects the environment. Now the next step will be to turn my practice into a complete illustration. For that, I’ll add backgrounds, details, and text, aiming for a mix of styles and a bit of that commercial illustration effect.
Le agregué los reflejos de las luces de alrededor, porque la superficie lisa del metal suele reflejar el entorno. Ahora lo siguiente será convertir mi práctica en una ilustración completa; para eso agregaremos fondos, detalles y texto, buscando una mezcla de estilos y un poco ese efecto de ilustración comercial.
