Education or Confusion? Why Some School Courses Need to Go”

This is a topic I’ve been thinking about for a while and I’m really happy to share my own opinion. Coming from someone who went through the Nigerian education system from primary school to university level I can boldly say that not all the courses we were taught are necessary, especially in this modern time.

I studied Mass Communication at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree. During my ND and HND days, we were given so many courses, some of them made sense, but some were just there to fill space if I’m being honest. For example, I rember taking courses like "History of Nigerian Media" or "Ethics in Journalism" every semester. Don’tet me wrong, they are important, but we don’t need to repeat same topics over and over again just with different course titles.

Right now, I work as a digital marketing expert and a UI/UX designer. Funny enough, many of the things I do today, I didn’t learn them from school. I had to teach myself online, take courses and practice on my own. So sometimes I ask myself, what was the essence of all those stress and writing long notes in class?

I feel like the school curriculum in Nigeria needs to be updated. Many courses should be merged or even removed completely. Some courses are outdated and not connected to what’s happening in today’s world. For instance, instead of spending time teaching “Communication Theories” in all levels, why not merge it and use that time to teach students how to use modern tools like Canva, Adobe XD, or even how to build a personal brand online?

Also, I believe more practical courses should be added. Students should be exposed to skills that will help them survive outside school. Imagine someone studying Mass Comm but graduating without knowing how to design a social media post or create basic content for brands. It doesn't make sense again in 2025.

Another thing is that most of the courses are one-size-fits-all. We are all forced to take same subjects, even when it doesn’t relate to our strength or interest. I think there should be room for students to pick more personalized courses as they move higher in school. That way, we will all come out with more useful knowledge instead of just struggling to pass exams we will never use in life.

In summary, I think not all courses are necessary in our education system. Some should be removed, some should be merged, and most importantly, more practical and modern skills should be added. Education is good, but it should also be relevant. I’m happy I found my way into tech, but I wish school had helped me discover it earlier.

Thanks for reading my little opinion. I know many people will have different experience but this na my own truth.

Exactly, some are not even necessary at all. Imagine studying transportation information in Nigeria, what exactly did they need that for . I just think some university are doing for money making

Seriously and collect money for handout

Same courses are repeated every semester? Isn’t that waste of time? For that one, I agree that something must be done about it.

Exactly.......thanks for stopping by sis

I feel you. I still don’t get the use of a certificate. Why so much importance is attached to it when all you need is to be job efficient. Maybe one day, I will understand it.

That's true ooo, certificate that doesn't guarantee you jobs after you graduate
