Emotional Intelligence is too important to consider it less needful. Without it, even if you are Intelligent academically, you will still have big problems in life. Life is not only about reading books and passing exams, you need to know how to properly relate and read people, and emotion intelligence does that for you.
You need emotional intelligence to help you read people. Just like a thermometer read the temperature of a body, it helps you read the character of people easily. When you enter a place, you should be conscious of how people behave there, and you can rightfully know this through emotional intelligence.
Fact, the most important communication are usually nonverbal. Reading people's posture, behaviour and looks. This is one of the important secret of success in power and mostly in the game of poker.
People will lie to you with words, but their face and eyes will always reveal the hidden truth in what are saying. They will tend to act in one way or the other and they will unknowingly reveal to you what their feelings and true intentions throughly are.
And also be aware of people who are also emotionally intelligent, they will always want to manipulate and provoke you to know your weakness and intentions. This is where self-mastery comes to play.
You can not be called a real master over other people when you don't know how to master yourself first. Self-mastery is the key. "Know thyself first".
