Greetings and welcome to my blog. As someone who is always on my phone creating contents or doing one thing or the other, I noticed for the last one month that I have been having some strain on my eyes due to too much screen time.
My phone has a Calculator that calculates the average number of hours I spend every week on my phone; it’s been 15hours of screen time and has reduced a little to 14 hours cos I had to reduce it due to the strain it was putting on my eyes.
Well I had to do a little research on the possible ways that I could reduce the strain on my eyes due to too much screen time. Here are some practical things I got a hang of, I applied them and they worked for me.
- The first is what is called the 20:20:20 principle. Here you get to take your eyes away from your screen after every 20 minutes and focus your eyes on something 20 meters away for 20 seconds. Then you can go back to your screen and repeat again.
You can also apply this rule by taking your eyes away from your screen after 20 minutes and close it for twenty seconds and repeat. In that way you allow your eyes some rest intermittently.
The next tactic you can try is to blink always. The eye strain comes from constant focus on the screen hence putting pressure on your eyes. Learn to consciously blink always while looking at the screen.
You can adjust the display of your screen brightness and contrast of your screen, ensure that it is comfortable for you.
You can activate blue light settings for your phone or eye care depending on the type of phone you use. Make it warmer.
Ensure that you position your screen at a comfortable distance and angle from your eyes. There are some phones that tells you the right distance to adjust your screen to when using them.
You can use blue light filtering glasses or apps that allow for blue light filtering.
You can adjust your phone fonts to bigger sizes to avoid straining your eyes to read from your phone. While this may not appear trendy, it has surely come in handy for me.
Most people want smaller and stylish font sizes and styles on their phones and I ask at what prize.
I beg to differ. My phone fonts are at the maximum and the letters are as large as my granny’s but I don’t care. The letters have never been easier to read like it is now and am not straining to see anything.
I care about my eyes and I’d do the needful to make them less stressed when they work.
You should also pity the eyes and give them enough rest. If you've done all these and you keep having strain on your eyes especially if they are painful, you should consider seeing a doctor.
