Victoria never believed in fate until a fortune cookie and a whisper changed everything.

She sat alone at her favorite Chinese restaurant, the dim lighting casting a warm glow over the red tablecloth. The day had been long, and she absentmindedly cracked open the fortune cookie beside her teacup. The slip of paper read: The whisper you hear tonight will guide you tomorrow. She smirked, tucking it into her purse. "Mysterious, but vague", she muttered, finishing her tea.
Outside, the city buzzed with life, but the air hung heavy with the promise of a storm. Victoria pulled her coat tighter as she walked home, the first raindrops tapping the pavement. By the time she reached her apartment building, the wind roared through the streets, wild and vibrant. She paused at the entrance, fumbling for her keys, when a soft whisper cut through the gale: "Say Yes".

Victoria froze, her pulse quickening. She scanned the empty street, but no one was there. The wind tugged at her hair, and the whisper seemed to echo: "Say Yes." She shook her head, blaming the stormy weather for playing tricks on her ears. Yet, as she stepped inside, the fortune cookie’s words replayed in her mind, refusing to be ignored.

The next morning, Victoria stopped at her usual coffee shop before work. The cozy space smelled of fresh pastries and brewed beans, a sanctuary in her hectic routine. She was stirring sugar into her latte when a voice broke her focus.
Excuse me, is this seat taken?”

She glanced up to see a tall man, with kind eyes and a disarming smile, gesturing to the empty chair across from her.
No, go ahead,” she said, her tone polite but distant.
I’m Damon,” he offered, settling in. “I’ve seen you here before. Always rushing off”.
Victoria blinked, caught off guard. “Work keeps me busy.”
Their small talk flowed easily, his warmth chipping away at her guarded edges. As she stood to leave, he hesitated, then said, “Would you like to grab dinner sometime? No pressure, just… I’d love your company.”
Her stomach knotted. She hadn’t dated since her last relationship crashed and burned months ago, leaving her wary of new beginnings. The word, 'no' formed on her lips, a reflex honed by countless rejections. But then she remembered the whisper from the wind: Say Yes. The fortune cookie’s promise flashed in her mind, and against her better judgment, she nodded. “Okay. Sure.”

Their first date unfolded at a quiet Italian restaurant, candlelight flickering across the table. Victoria braced for awkwardness, but Damon’s easy humor and genuine curiosity surprised her. She laughed more that night than she had in months, a spark of possibility igniting within her.
Over the next six months, their relationship grew steadily. They wandered the city together; art galleries, bookstores, parks. Each date peeling back layers of her caution. Damon was patient, never pressing her to move faster than she could. She shared her fears, her past heartbreak, and he listened, offering quiet strength. In return, he revealed his own dreams, his kindness a steady anchor.
Yet, doubt lingered. Each step closer to love stirred memories of betrayal, urging her to retreat. But every time, she remembered the fortune and whisper that brought her up to that point, nudging her forward.

One crisp autumn evening, Damon planned a date that felt different. He was quieter than usual as they strolled through the park, leaves crunching beneath their feet. They reached a gazebo aglow with beautiful lights, and Victoria’s breath caught at its beauty.

Victoria,” Damon began, his voice unsteady. He took her hands, his gaze locking with hers. “These past six months have been everything to me. You’ve shown me what love can be: real, fearless, beautiful. I don’t want a future without you”.
Her heart pounded as he knelt, revealing a ring that sparkled in the soft light. “Will you marry me?”
The world stilled. Strangers gathered nearby, their cheers a distant hum. Victoria’s mind raced back to that stormy night, the fortune cookie, the whisper. Tears welled as she realized how far she’d come, guided by a voice she’d nearly ignored. Wiping a teardrop from her cheek, she smiled, her voice trembling with certainty. “Yes”.

Damon’s face lit up, and he slipped the ring onto her finger. The crowd erupted, but Victoria barely heard them, wrapped in his embrace. She silently thanked the whisper that had led her here, to a love she’d never dared imagine.

Nice story.
Although my heart was pounding when he asked if the seat was taken and she said no. I was wondering just what if that question was the one she was meant to say "yes" to, to avoid something horrible 😅.
But thank goodness it ended well.

Luckily, she remembered
