WE #265: A Heartwarming Weekend Lunch Under the Mango Tree with My Family

Happy Weekends, everyone!

Today, it’s a great pleasure to share with you my answer in of the questions given by @galenkp for this weekend-engagement 265.

What are you doing this weekend and why?

This past weekend reminded me that some of the most joyful times in life are often the simplest—time spent with loved ones under the shade of a familiar tree, laughter echoing in the background, and the delightful perfume of good food filling the air.

Our family decided to enjoy lunch outside, beneath our ancient mango tree, which has witnessed numerous events over the years. The weather was sunny but pleasantly warm, and a soft wind carried the aroma of home-cooked food. Everyone was overjoyed at this impromptu suggestion.

Our supper was a feast of our favorite delicacies. We ate grilled pork that was smoky and wonderfully charred, precisely the way we prefer it. On the table next to it was grilled tilapia with crispy skin and soft, flavorful flesh, seasoned with simple spices that complemented its natural flavor. We also enjoyed a large helping of chicken adobo, a traditional Filipino meal with tender chicken thighs marinated in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and bay leaves. The sauce was so amazing that it made you crave more rice!

To balance the richness of the meat and fish, we prepared boiled vegetables, including eggplant, okra, and ampalaya, which are healthy and refreshing, especially when dipped in bagoong or paired with a bit of vinegar. And what's a Filipino lunch without soft drinks to wash it all down? The cold soda added an extra sparkle of satisfaction as we shared stories and bites between sips.

Before we began eating, we took a moment to express our gratitude. Our small kid, Keeon, full of innocence and charm, offered to lead the prayer. His kind and straightforward words of gratitude moved everyone. There was something so simple about hearing him thank God for the food, our family, and even our dog, who was eagerly wagging its tail nearby.

Our dog truly made the moment even more special. He wandered from one person to another, hoping for a treat or two, adding a playful presence to our peaceful gathering. His joy and loyalty were reminders of the love that surrounds us every day.

We sat there eating, talking, and laughing, and time seemed to slow down. The mango tree above us swayed gently, its leaves whispering in the breeze, as if it, too, was enjoying the family gathering down below. There were no phones or distractions—only pure, uninterrupted connection.

These are the memories that stick with me: the warmth of shared meals, the sound of genuine laughter, the presence of each family member, and the beauty of being together in one location. It was a weekend with no need for travel—just home, nice food, and the people who meant most.

As lunch ended, we cleaned up together, still smiling and conversing. The kids ran around the yard, the dog barked happily, and the adults took a moment to relax and enjoy the scenery. In those quiet moments, I felt overwhelmed with appreciation for my family, nature, and a weekend that had nourished both my body and soul.

This meal under the mango tree will remain a treasured memory for me.
